  • 4 WCnewsmagazine SGA sponsors Presidents Auction By Max Long, SGA Media Director On the evening of February 20, the Student Government Association sponsored the President's Auction in the UC Grand room. At this event, leaders of campus clubs and organizations were auctioned off to the highest bidder in the audience in an effort to raise money for Relay for Life. Many students showed up to support the 9 participants who had agreed to participate. The highest bid of the night was $85 and went for Senior Lauren Riggan. Riggan, who represented the Alpha Xi Delta, will put all of this money toward her sororitys Relay for Life fund. Overall, the auction was @ great success and everyone seemed to have a good time, Danny Muse, SGA Deputy Director of Internal Affairs and event planner commented, "We raised $272 total for charity and we would like to thank everyone who helped to make this event possible. | would also like to thank Bart Andrus for doing such a great job as auctioneer. The Scholar Ship now accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate stude Inaugural voyage set for January 2) The first study-at-sea program designed specifically for an international student body announced its itinerary and academic partners. Some 700 students will be selected to sail aboard The Scholar Ship, a ship-based study abroad program supported by a consortium of five preeminent international universities. Backing comes from Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd., one of the worlds largest intemational cruise lines. The Scholar Ship will depart from Athens in January 2007 en route to seven historic ports on five continents over 16 weeks. 7 As the world grows flatter, the value of a transnational approach to higher education cannot be overstated, commented Joseph Olander, president of The Scholar Ship. The Scholar Ship program is designed to prepare young adults to live and work in an increasingly interdependent, global environment. They'll be immersed in an intercultural setting, explore their fields of study in compelling destinations, and develop a network of lifelong friends and colleagues from around the globe. The Scholar Ship's Consortium of Academic Stewards is comprised of esteemed universities from around the world, including Australias Macquarie University, China's Peking University, Mexico's Tecnolgico de Monterrey, Morocco's Al Akhawayn University and the University of Ghana. Its strategic partners include The Jane Goodall institute and the Intercultural Communication institute among others. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has provided funding and full operational support for this distinctive transnational academic program at sea. Having traveled the world through business and pleasure, | believe The Scholar Ship's goals of building a globally competent and culturally sensitive workforce cannot be more timely and essential, noted Richard Fain, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. I look forward to personally greeting The Scholar Ship's inaugural student class. Students of The Scholar Ship will depart Piraeus (Athens) on January 10, 2007, with ports of call that include Casablanca, Morocco; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Cape Town, South Aftica; Fremantle (Perth), Australia; Singapore; Cochin, India and Lamaca, Cyprus. The ship returns to Athens on May 1. The consortium of universities serving as academic stewards ensures that the program conforms to the highest global standards. The onboard and shore side curricula are specifically designed to develop students intercultural competencies. In addition to a core subject focusing on intercultural communication, students will be able to select a Learning Circle, which enables them to take a series of courses based around a central theme, such as international business, intemational relations, sustainable development, global cultures and social change, or worlds of art and culture. Macquarie University has been designated by the program's Consortium of Academic Stewards to award academic credit for successful completion of The Scholar Ship's semester-long program. nts worldwide: 007 Presy Release The introduction of The Scholar Ship reflects the increased interest and extraordinary growth in study abroad programs. Nearly 200,000 American students studied abroad in 2003-04, a 9.6% increase from the year before, Which exceeds the 8.5% increase the previous year, according to The Institute of International Education. In December, The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution, introduced by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-I.) and Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), designating 2006 as the "Year of Study Abroad encouraging the expansion of study abroad opportunities. The Senate concurred with the bi-partisan federal Commission on the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program, Which recently published a report on U.S. student exchanges. Furthermore, at a recent gathering of American university presidents in Washington D.C., U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was joined by PresidentBush, Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and ther dignitaries to underscore the pressing need for students both here and abroad to gain a global perspective of the world. "We need universities to open their doors from all over around the world. We need universities to send their students around the world. So through that exchange and contact, we can learn more about each other because the truth of the matter is: if we're engaged only ina monologue, we will not get very far, Secretary Rice warned.
