  • WCU Trackmen Take 1st Place At Relays THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday April 10, 1973 page Heav. rains, steady winds and temperatures dipping into the forties turned Saturday's running of the third annual Western Carolina Relays into a treacherous survival contest. Despite the elements, the WCU track and field team showed its endurance by takingthe first place crown with a total of 76 & 1 /2 points. Placing second was West Georgia College with 53 1/2, then Winston-Salem State with 40 1/2, Brevard College with 32, High Point College with 30 and Lees - McRae rounding things out with 13 1/2 points. Even wito Western's all- weather track and a talent- laden field of participants, the inclement weather managed to hamper any serious attempts at record times or distances. Suprisingly enough, two record marks were set in the meet. Joe Laboone of West Georgia ignored dangerous runways covered in water and set a new pole vault high of 14*3", bettering the 14'0" of WCU's Ron Autrey in 1971. The other recordwasa 148'& 1" discus toss by Brevard's John Johnson. It shattered the 1972 distance of Pembroke's Richard Finger by almost 10 feet. Highlights for the Catamount team came in lie reluys where Randy Layman, Levon Wilson, Clarence Thomas, Craig Gold- speed and Jerry Gaines combined talents to record first place fi.ilslics in t'ui 440 .ud SSO-jwrd rolays as well as in the mile relav. Individual efforts earned WCU's Chandler Muse a first place in the high jump with a 6*2" attempt,, The Cats' Je ; ry Gaines also captured the premier position in the triple jump. Although Gaines was favored in the long jump, the weather hampered the jumpers and oaines could only manage a second place finish. WCii track coach Paul Jones will have his team in i.ction a- gain today as the Cats take on South Carolina State in a dual meet at home. Starting time is slated fur 2:30 p.m. with action scheduled to continue throughout the afternoon on the all-weather track.
