  • 20 | WCnewsmagazine By Zachary Colburn + WCnewsmagazine chance at a conference tournament repeat and automatic bid for the Lady Catamounts was just not in the cards. The 7 seed Lady Catamounts knocked off the 5' seed Appalachian State Lady Mountaineers in the quarterfinals before falling to the # 1 seed Chattanooga Lady Mocs in the semi- finals. Western Carolina finished 9-20 on the season. A good thing to take from this tournament is that Western will only lose just one player (Teyawna Hardy) from this year's team, so expect maybe a stronger run next year. In their first game of the tournament, Westem knocked off Appalachian State, 80-74 in the quarterfinals of the Southem Conference tournament at Mcallister Field House on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. The win was Western's 3 of he season againstthe Lady Mountaineers. The win also kept Coach Kellie Harper undefeated as an assistant coach and ahead coach in her young coaching career (14-0 all-time, 5-0 at WCU). For the most part, Western found themselves trailing the majority of the 1 half, trailing by 6 early, 10-4 just 3 minutes into the game. Western would come back to within 2, 13-11 with 12:38 left in the half, but Appalachian State would extend their lead to 8, 21-13 with 10:53 left. The Lady Catamounts would go on a 12-2 run to take their first lead of the game of 4, 29-25 with less than 5 minutes left in the half. The game would see-saw back-and-forth over the last 5 minutes of the half. SoCon Freshman of the Year, Lauren Powell would end the 1* half on a high note for the Lady Cats, draining her first 3 of the game with: 10 seconds left in the half, to go into the locker room, up by 3, 37-34. Of Western's 37 points, 20 of those points were from players coming off the bench, with 9 of them courtesy of freshman Teshymia Tillman. Appalachian State won the battle of the boards, 22-19, including 8-4 onthe offensive end. Western did win the points in the paint battle, 14- 8, while committing only 5 turnovers in the 1* half. Western shot 12-for- 416 from the charity stripe. Appalachian State raced out of the gates in the 2 half and got 4 quick points, to take a 1-point lead, 38-37, less than a minute into the half. The Lady Mountaineers would get the lead to 3, 42-39 before Western embarked on a 17-to-4 run over the next 9 minutes to take a 10-point lead 56-46, a lead that they would never relinquish. However, Appalachian would not go away peacefully, pulling within 1, 68-67, with 2:08 left in the game. Tillman would drain her 2* 3-pointer of the game to extend the lead back up to 4, 71-67. Appalachians Whitney Tossie did her best to keep her Lady Mountaineers in the game with a lay-up of her own after Tillman's trifecta, but a missed 3-pointer by Eboni Kirby would force Appalachian to foul down the stretch. Western would connect on 9-of-10 free throws down that stretch to get the victory in the final minute, 80-71. Western was led by Tillman's 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting including a career-high, 2 3-pointers. Sophomore Monique Dawson scored 12 points, 8 of them coming from the charity stripe. Classmate Jessika Johnson just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and a team-leading 9 rebounds. Ashley Pellom and freshman Amelia Miller each contributed 8 points apiece and Lauren Powell chipped in 7. Repeat opportunity falls short for Western Carolina Appalachian State (15-13) had 4 players score in double figures. Seniors Kiki Conyers and Jocelyn Wyatt led the way with 18 and 17 points, respectively. Tossie added 11 points with classmate Kirby contributing 10. Junior Danielle Edwards ted the Mountaineers with 9 rebounds, Western out-rebounded Appalachian State, 42-40, but Appalachian won the offensive battle 16-15, The Lady Catamounts shot 30-for-36 (83.3- percent) from the free throw line, including going 18-for-20 (90-percent) in the 2 half. Appalachian State shot 83.3-percent (20-for-24) from the charity stripe, as well. Inthe semifinals, Western went against the #1 seed in the tournament, the Chattanooga Mocs. Western was denied their third straight trip to the Conference Championship game as they fell to Chattanooga, 77-73 to end their season. The Lady Mocs started out the 1* half by burying 2 3-pointers and quickly gaining a 10-2 advantage. Chattanooga would score on their first 6 possessions to begin the game. After trailing 15-4 with 17:29 left in the game, Wester would go on a 14-6 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Sophomore Monique Dawson, who contributed 5 points during the run to cut the lead to 3, 21-18 with 11:51 to go. Chattanooga would counter with a 13-3 run of their own, which was keyed by a 3-pointer from UTC Sophomore Brooke Hand to regain a double-digit advantage at 13, 34-21 with 6:29 left before the half. Both teams would trade baskets with Chattanooga getting their lead to 12 with 2:29 left before going into halftime with a 10-point, 42-32, lead at halftime. In the 1% half, Wester had 19 points courtesy of bench players. Chattanooga out-rebounded Wester, 27-21, including 9-5 on the offensive side, while committing 7 tumovers to just 3 for the Lady Mocs. Western would start the 2 haif by going on a 22-9 run, erasing the 10- point deficit and taking a 3-point lead, 54-51, with 11:47 left in the game. The Lady Mocs would go on a run of their run, a 10-2 run which included 8 straight points to take a 61-56 lead with 8:38 left in the game. Western would come back and tie the game at 71 all with just over 2 minutes left in regulation of a Dawson pointer followed by a Chevon Keith basket to put Westen up by 2, 73-71 On the next possession, the Lady Mocs would pound the ball inside causing Western defense inside to collapse, then kick it out to a wide open Lauren Hall who drained the 3-pointer to take the lead for good, 74-73 with: 52 seconds left. Western was unable to convert on their final 2 possessions, missing two shots from beyond 3-point range and the Chattanooga would convert 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch in the last minute to increase their final win margin 104, 77-73. Western had 4 players score in double figures, led by 17 from Dawson including 3-of-7 from the 3-point land. Freshman Amelia Miller scored a career- high 14 points coming off the bench. Sophomores Jessika Johnson and Chevon Keith had 12 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Kendra Eaton led in the rebounding department with 7 rebounds. Chattanooga was led by senior Tiffani Robersons 26 points and 15, rebounds, good for her 9" career double-double. Classmate Katasha Brown scored 12 points, but only had 2 points in the 2 half and Nicole Mattison posted her 3 career double-double and first of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Mattison fell just 1 assist shy of a trouble-trouble with 9 assists. Chattanooga won the battle on the boards, 49-47, but Western won the offensive end, 18-17. Both teams committed 11 turnovers apiece. Chattanooga shot 80.8-percent (21-for-26) from the free-throw; Wester shot 60-percent (12-for-20). Westem Carolina guard Monique Dawson was named to the SoCon Women's Basketball Al-tournament team. She was the only Catamount honored and just one of 2 players named to the 10-player team not from the champion (Chattanooga) or runner-up (UNC-Greensboro) teams. Dawson averaged 14.5 in < . poinsinine 2 games. Photo Credit: Mark Haskett
