16 | WCnewsmagazine Women in the U.S. vs. the World By Rachel Mitchel America is known as the country of freedom and opportunity. Women are protected under the Constitution and Bill of Rights to have equal rights like anyone else. However, in many countries this is not the case, and in these countries, women have little or no rights. A woman's main role throughout most of the world was to have babies and take care of the family, which is apparent in areas that have a high birth rate. The high birth rate for women is associated with the culture and economi and social settings of the woman. The birth rate for women in lower-income countries can be higher than that of the U.S. In the U.S., the birth rate is Presently 14.14 births to every 1,000 people. Places such as East Asia, South Asia, Europe and Eastern North America have the highest birth rates. Women throughout many areas of the world are considered to be inferior to men. An example of this would be in the Chinese culture; the only job for a woman was to take care of the household. She was not allowed to make any decisions concerning the family. If she was not married, she was under the rule of her family. If she was married, she was under the rule of her husband. Also, if she was a widow, she was under the rule of her son. However, this role of women started to change with the Peoples Republic of China. The Communist Party realized that since women made up half of China's population, it was Recessary to liberate women to complete emancipation. When education is concemed, women in America can go to high school and college without restrictions. It is only recently that women were even allowed to go to school in some societies. In the U.S., women did not go to school because it was thought that they only needed to prepare for motherhood and marriage. A girl was taught by her mother, or if the family was wealthy, she would have a private teacher. Girls could attend the master's schools for boys if there was enough room. This was usually during the summer. By the end of the 19 century, women students increased with the addition of women's colleges and admitting women in regular colleges or universities. At first the role of women in the East was more favorable than in the West. In india, women had individual freedoms and some property rights. However, women were not completely subdued: in fact, there are whole eras of women rulers such as Queen Elizabeth of England, Catherine the Great of Russia and Queen Victoria of England. Awoman in the work force is a relatively new idea for many countries. The U.S. women had to work up to 12 hours a day usually in a dangerous environment and often with children working next to them. Britain was the first to issue a law that stated women were not allowed to work more than 10 hours a day. America didnt pass this law until several years later. The military was the last place people thought women should be. Women were thought to be too physically weak and unable to perform the duties that were required for military service. Women did not become a major part of the military until World War II. In the past, Women also helped in America by taking over front line jobs that were normally for men. Most countries now allow women in the military, but discrimination is still a problem. Women play an active role in any society, just in different ways depending on their location in the world. Women in the United States have not always treated the way they are today. Women in America had to fight for the rights they now have, and continue to fight for a more equal nation. Women in the western worid have made leaps and bounds compared to women living in developing countries.
