  • Western scholar By Gary Takacs * Wenewsmagazine had the opportunity to partic Photo by WCU OPI community. * and initiatives. engagement at WCU By Carla Batchelor WGnewsmagazine 2 College campuses are often known as political hotbeds for issues confronting the nation. Currently at Western, a group of faculty and students are working on various projects to get students more involved in their surroundings. The seven students and nine professors represent all different backgrounds and departments on campus. The diversity of the participants is to ensure diverse projects that will affect different sectors of society. The students have designed their own projects to work on throughout the semester. Individual and group projects are designed and implemented with the help of the professors involved. The participating faculty members represent the History, Political Science, Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology and English departments. The projects range from glass recycling, to a polling April Fools Day By Lilli Nicholson * wenewsmagazine April Fool's Day comes every year on April 1. This is a holiday that brings about practical jokes and tricks in abundance. With every joke, though, comes some that get a little out of hand. So, here are some safe, fun jokes to play on your friends. Warning some may be messy, but are still a fot of fun: * Drop a few drops of food coloring into a bottle of water or a small container of milk. This will make the drinker think that the milk is some kind of flavor, but they will be in for a surprise! * Ifyou have a faucet with a spray nozzle, tie a rubber band or piece Of string around the handle or tape the handle to put it in spray mode (while the water is tured off). That way, the nozzle will already be in Spray-mode. Make sure that whatever you secure the handle with is the same color as the spray nozzle. This one is a little messy, though. Whoever comes and turns the water on next will get sprayed. Supergiue a pen cap to a pen, then go around asking people to help you get the cap off. + Get a.candy bar and tie some fishing wire around comes to eat it, pull it just out of reach. Fill friend's car with balloons, packing peanuts, bubble wrap or something else that will fil their car. When someone Inter-Fraterni ity Council gets anew president: gets to take the reigns Every organization requires a great leader, and with that great leader, in turn, that organization will do great things. The Inter-Fratemity Council of Western recently elected Benjamin BJ Pendry to do just that. BJ is a senior here at Wester maj ite as a mentor in a leadership program sponsored by the National Inter-Fraternity. Council He also took on an internship with the Undergraduate Inter-fratemity Institute where he learned the basis of advanced programming, group values, risk management and leadership development. BJ has started his presidential career by hitting the ground running. He already has plans to organizea leadership development course at Wester thats designed to teach fratemity chapter presidents the importance of risk management, recruitment policies and community service. The IFC is the governing body of all the fratemnities that Westem has. It provides a forum for discussion of commen problems, serves as recruitment supervisor, supports social activities and aids the university and the surrounding BU is off to a great start with his position and students welcome the next experience of his personality, WCnewsmagazine 1 joring in Political Science which makes him the perfect man for the job. BJ has programs station on campus, to starting a new socialist organization here at WCU. With the help of the Honors College, different departments on campus and members of the local community, these students hope to achieve their goals by the end of the semester or soon thereafter. All the hard work the students, have put in will not to go unnoticed around campus. While the students involved in the class are receiving a one-hour credit for their participation, they will not be able to accomplish their goals alone. Information will be forthcoming on how students not registered for the class can get involved, get active, and help out their fellow students and community. Any questions regarding this class can be directed to Dr. John Habel of the Psychology Department at habel@email.wcu. edu. + Make a sponge cake sponge, frosting and all. a glass of water with food coloring so that it looks like someone's favorite juice. Serve it to them and watch their face as they realize they're drinking water and not juice. * Puta spool of thread in your pocket and leave the end hanging out. Go up to someone you know and say I've been pulling at this string all day and it just won't come out. Let them pull at it until they have a handful of thread. Remember, no one is safe from pranks. So, just because you think that you have the ultimate joke or prank, it doesnt mean that someone else might think the same thing. Here are some pitfalls to avoid. People generally don't like having their things irreparably damaged, getting wet or messy, or having a large mess to clean up on their own-So; covering a toilet seat with saran wrap (or something else equally as gross) would not be the best idea. So this April Foo!s, get people good, have fun and be safe!
