  • 18 | WCnewsmagazine , A new start for WCU volleyball By Alice Morrison WCnewsmagazine Catamount fans, prepare for the new face of Western Carolina Volleyball! Several changes have occurred since we saw our Lady Cats in Ramsey last season, the most obvious being a collage of new faces. Although there are eight returning players this season, the dynamics of the team appear to be changing for several reasons. First of all, the Cats lost several starters from last years team. Stefanie Peters and Layna Stoetzel graduated. In addition, Kellyn Thaut, Melissa Parana, and Robin Everly have all moved on for varying reasons. Also, at the end of the 2004-2005 season, Angell Benson resigned as head coach for family reasons. Needless to say, such drastic changes can affect the progress of any team. But as the 2005- 2006 team scrimmaged themselves on Saturday, August 20, in the Ramsey Auxiliary gym, the returning and new faces seemed to be working together quite well, especially considering their short time as a team. The first new faces of Catamount Volleyball are on the coaching staff. After a seven season stay as head coach at Centre College in Danville, KY, Stephanie Dragan now leads the Catamounts as head coach. Coach Dragan put together a 159-107 record during her seven seasons at Centre. In addition, Dragan graduated from Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio, where she played as a setter. Her assistant coach, Chris Taylor, is a graduate of Western Michigan University and most recently served as an assistant coach at Manchester College in Indiana. The coaches greeted eight returning players to preseason practice. Ellie Talbot, the teams lone senior, has moved from libero to outside hitter, after recovering from shoulder injuries. Leading the junior class are Heather Koontz and Danielle Spitzer, who will add power and experience to the team, while returning sophomore standout Meredith Harmon will bring height and control. Other returning players include Kate Willard, Meghan Boyle, Genevieve _ Johnson, and Andrea Smith. With the changing dynamics of a young team, _ fans should look for all returning players to step up and build this team. But dont forget to look out for the surprises of new faces as well! Krista Neumann, a junior transfer from UT Martin, offers up a solid game as a right-side hitter while Tracy Justice, a standout freshman walk-on from Hendersonville, NC, will possibly start at libero. Lanna Roach, from St. Augustine, FL, and Elaine Castle, from Duluth, GA, round out the freshman recruits for the season. Although the Lady Cats suffered their first two losses this past weekend at Middle Tennessee State, fans should look forward to watching this team grow throughout the year. Their first home game will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2005, in the Ramsey Center. The game starts at 7pm. Dont miss the chance to support this new coaching staff and team as they strive to build a championship squad! Catamounts Predicted to Finish 7" in SoCon By Zachary Colbum * WCnewsmagazine : The words first and new are going to be very synonymous with the - 2005 Lady Catamounts Soccer team this season. A new soccer field awaits the Lady Catamounts and first-year coach Tammy DeCesare this year for them to play on. Before their first-ever night match in Catamount soccer history, they open up their season with a trip to the Big Apple for the Niagara omens Soccer Classic at Niagara University on August 6" thru the 28". For the first time in the teams history, Western ill face St. Bonaventure of the Atlantic 10 conference. The isecond game of the tournament ill be against the host Niagara Purple Eagles. ust the second coach in the programs _ history, | Coach DeCesare will lead her squad against Southern Conference opponents by playing their home games at the newly christened atamount Athletic Complex. he Lady Cats home opener ill be against new Assistant oach James Krygers former quad, the Camels of Campbell University. This contest will mark the first home soccer match played under the lights for the Lady Catamounts. As another incentive, the first 150 fans through the gate will receive a free t-shirt. Game time is set for September 2 at 6:00 p.m. The Graduation Bug had little effect on the Soccer team this past spring, as the team lost just one senior from a year ago and just four total players. This year the Lady Catamounts are expected to be lead by six seniors. Team MVP Natasha Moore has returned, along with fellow Seniors Megan Chambers, Casey Davis, Marie Nicolini, Emily Pierce and Natalie Turgeon. Leading scorer Stephanie Svobeda returns from last year, along with 2 year players Heather Dittmer, Lauren Atkinson, and Leah Daino. Seasoned goalie Alesha Row, who started every match as a sophomore last season, is back for her junior year. A trio of freshmen, Buki Baruwa, Arian Whittle and Jessica Fahey, are hoping to contribute as well as add depth at their perspective positions. Of the Lady Cats 20 games this season, five of their games will be against first-time opponents. Besides St. Bonaventure and Niagara, the Lady Catamounts will play Longwood University, Eastern Kentucky and Francis Marion. They will also play the Pirates of East Carolina in Greenville, NC, to go along with hosting Southern Conference opponents, UNC Greensboro, The Citadel, arch-rival Appalachian State, Chattanooga and Davidson College. Despite being picked seventh out of 11 teams in the Southern Conference and having no players on the all-Conference team, the Lady Catamounts and Coach DeCesare are using those two factors to motivate themselves for the upcoming season.
