  • 12 | WCnewsmagazine No parking catastrophe according to faculty -By Jennifer Scism * WCnewsmagazine Western is broadening its horizons, but with that comes a lot of change. Some people think it's for the better while others see it as controversial. Students on campus are not afraid to voice their opinions concerning the parking situation here at WCU. Not all students have the same viewpoint, but virtually all are annoyed by the inconvenience. However, students are not the only group of individuals annoyed or concerned about parking. Faculty and staff have a lot to say about the situation, as well. When asked about parking, a lot of faculty and staff reminisce over their days as college students. Faculty and staff remember parking on the outskirts of a campus and walking or taking a transit to the center of campus fdt'class. Most agree that we, as students and staff, have it much easier here at Western, compared to other schools, when it comes to parking. The fact is that parking at WCU is a rare situation. Most universities do not have parking in central campus locations. They still accommodate parking the way our faculty rememibrsby placing parking lotson the outer edges of campus. If you ask a group of WCU students about the parking situation, some will probably answer with a reply hinting that faculty and staff are being over- accommodated and that students are being under-accommodated. So what do members of the faculty and staff think? Lynda McNeely of the Advising Center says, The situation has been more difficult at the moment because of construction. Construction is taking up _a lot of spaces, leaving everyone fighting to get a parking spot. Mrs. McNeely - Stated, The system will help tremendously. When asked if the new parking situation was fair to all she said, Yes. Faculty and staff need to be near their offices to serve students better. With the Cat Tran students have the ability to get where they need to be. Dr. Adkison of the Biology Department stated that he walks or bikes to campus and therefore cant really say if parking has improved or not. He did say, however, It hopefully has reduced traffic on campus. It seems like it would save commuters time when parking, but there may be cases when it does not. When asked if the new parking situation is fair to all people on campus, Dr. Adkison stated, Without students, we dont have a university. We should not cater to them academically, but its fair to convenience students when it comes to matters other than academics. Dr. Adkison said he thought that walking to campus was a great idea. Dr. Lewis of the History Department said, Parking is infinitely more difficult at the moment because there are fewer spaces and more cars. He stated, This is a fair system for us. The university has been opened up to more students, but parking was not increased a lot. It will be difficult. Approximately one hundred new faculty and staff members were hired this year at Western. It is very hard to accommodate the increase in faculty and students at the same time, when no other parking lots have emerged. The basic message from faculty seems to be that we all need to prepare ourselves in the mornings when it comes to parking. Students may just have to take heed to some advice and prepare themselves to walk farther like our faculty did when they were in college. Campus parking has become serious problem for students By Carla Batchelor * WCnewsmagazine As we all know, parking is one of the hardest things to get used to as a student on campus. This year has been no different. Yes, there is a lot of work being done to improve the quality of this campus, but a section of the student body. is being alienated in the process. While commuter parking has never been a total piece of cake, in the years past it has been an easier transition, thats for sure. It is understandable that since faculty spots were being taken away by the construction here on campus, the only reasonable thing is to relocate those spots. But at a cost to whom? There is no doubt that the faculty needs to park too, but should it be at a cost to the commuter students? Western is the academic location for many students who commute from as far away as Hendersonville just to attend classes. Should these students have to drive over an hour to get to their classes and then have to deal with a big sign on Highway 107 telling them where to park when they have class on the other side of campus? If there was such a need for the large sign on the highway due to the high volume of commuters, why not make more parking spots? : The Cat Tran is a newerfeature on campus, which is a good thing that has been needed for a while. Well,:if the Cat Tran is supposed to assist faculty, staff and students making their rounds around our campus, why can't it run on time? This past week has been full of ups and downs all over campus, as everyone is getting used to the new roads and construction. If this campus is supposed to run smoothly, parking grievances need to be dealt with. The Cat Tran has not run on time this week, and the administration decided to change the route of the Cat Tran in the middle of the first week of class. While yes, it is understandable that they want to help people get from point A to point B as fast and as smoothly as possible, then why not try out new routes during the summer? Why not get all of your ducks in a row before this campus becomes flooded again with students, faculty, and staff? It only makes logical sense to get everything in order before causing a larger commotion by waiting too long. Now, the police officers who are standing around campus only letting faculty and staff into certain areas, are an interesting addition. | think that isa sign that the University recognizes the parking issue at hand, but instead of fixing the problem, we are only paying for cops to make it harder to get around campus whether or not if we are looking for a parking spot. | think that instead of paying these cops extra money to watch what cars go in and out, the university needs to build new parking lots with enough parking spots so that the problem does not get out of hand. So what happened to all the money that is charged for parking tickets? | OPINION know | am one of many students who has received a parking ticket for any one of multiple violations. Why not raise the fine to generate more money? Yes, the price of a ticket has gone up since my freshman year, but why not make it 15 or 20 dollars a ticket? Then, use that money to make more parking and get more Cat Trans out there so the campus can run smoothly. Students have to pay their parking tickets one way or another; if it is not paid by the specific date, then it goes on your bill. So the money is going somewhere, but where is it going? What is the university going to do in five years when these problems are not fixed, the campus keeps growing in size, and the problems at hand escalate to a point in which no one knows what to do? Anyone who has been at Western for at least a year can see the changes that have taken place on campus. While change is usually a good thing. which allows for better opportunities for everyone, Western has a long way to go in order for this campus to run successfully in the future. Change does take time, but change should not alienate members of the campus community in the process. Hopefully, things will get better shortly before causing more problems than we originally started out with.
