  • WCnewsmagazine 17 Travis Hill. Travis Hill, James Conklin, and Lamar Barnes were the top three tacklers on last season team with 48, 47, and 46 tackles, respectively. The speedy trio will look to wreak havoc on the opposing teams ball carriers. The secondary will be led by physica upperclassmen Primus Glover and Bruce Lee. The senior, Glover, was a 1*-team preseason pick and finished sixth on the team last year in tackles and also contributed two interceptions. At 61, 210 Ibs the former East Tennessee State transfer is a physical safety that will knock a couple of wide receivers heads off when they come across the middle this year. Bruce Lee, on the other hand, is a diminutive junior standing at 58 and 155 Ibs. Lee is a 2"%-team preseason pick though, and plays much bigger than his size. Bruce also has the luxury of being one of the Catamoun fans favorite players for his famous name and physica playing style. The final unit to remember from this preview of the 2005 Cats is the special teams. Last year, the kicking game was horrible and WCU only converted 9 of 17 field goals and 24 of 30 extra point attempts In order for WCU to take the next step in the SoCon Conference this year, the kicking must be improved Kicker Tim Mayse only converted 8 of 16 field goals last year, and in order to keep his job, he must show a lot of improvement. Luckily, for Mayse, he doubles as a punter where he is a 2"team preseason pick. If Mayse can show as much talent at kicking as he does at punting, then the Cats will be in a lot better position to win games this year. One final key stat to look at this year for the Cats will be the second half scoring margin. In the first half of games in 2004, the Cats held a 126-98 point advantage, but in the second half of games, the Cats were outscored 150- 119. The third quarter was especially horrible with a 66-32 margin, and while | the offense posted 87 fourth quarter points, the defense allowed 84. If Western | could have cut just 22 of those second half points last year, which would still have kept the second half scoring margin negative at 128-119, then the Cats could have went 7-4 instead of 4-7. If the Catamounts pick up their second half performance, then there is no reason why WCU should not be a contender for the SoCon Championship.
