  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN NEWS January 10,2001 ublic safety highlights December 18 At 4:00 p. m. on 12/14, officers received a report that a student had been involved in inappropriate activity on the Internet off-campus and representatives of AOL had asked for assistance. Officers spoke with the student and corrected the problem. On 12/15, officers drew and served a warrant on a male non-student for auto larceny in connection with an offense that happened in October. Officers brought the suspect back from McDowell County where he had been incarcerated to Jackson County where he will stand trial. At 2:45 p. m., officers referred a student to Student Affairs for follow-up action for verbal abuse of a Housing staff member. At 3:30 p. m., officers investigated a hit & run accident which may have occurred at Subway. At 10:20 a. m., officers assisted a father in identifying a suspect in a vandal ism which occurred to his son's vehicle off campus on Saturday night. The identity of the suspect was given to the father so he could draw a warrant. December 19 In District Court in Sylva, a former student charged with possession of cocaine, marijuana, and paraphernalia pled guilty to possession of marijuana and was placed on probation for one year, fined $50 and costs, and ordered to attend drug treatment. At 1:35 p. m., an employee reported that a vending machine in Scott had been damaged and some snacks stolen from it. At 4:25 p. m., a student reported that someone had put dirt and rocks in his gas tank in August. He does not know where this occurred. December 20 A 10:55 a. m., Housing staff reported finding possible drug paraphernalia in a room on the 4th floor of Harrill. Officers confiscated the suspicious items. December 22-31 At 2:30 pm on 12-22, officers responded to a report of a male subject trying to gain entry into Albright. Officers were unable to locate the suspect. Entry had not been gained. At 12:30 pm on 12-27, officers turned away telephone contractors attempting to gain entry into Forsyth. January 1 At 12:42 pm on 1 -1, officers responded to a door alarm in Graham caused by a physical plant worker making rounds. At 2:36 pm on 1 -1, officers responded to a burglary alarm in the bookstore. The alarm had been activated by the heating system. At 4:50 pm on 1 -1, officers investigated a suspicious vehicle on campus. January 2 In District Court in Sylva, a male non- student pled guilty to possession of marijuana and received probation for one year. A female student pled guilty to possession of marijuana and was fined $75 and placed on probation for one year. January 3 Officers responded to a fire alarm at Hunter Library caused by popcorn which was burned in a microwave oven at 12:56 p. m. January 5-7 At 1:20 p. m. on 1/5, a student reported that his bicycle had been stolen from the front of Scott between December 19 and January 5. At 11:15 a. m. on 1/6, a staff member in the Outreach Center reported a dog in the building. Officers transported the dog to the Animal Shelter. At 3:30 p. m. on 1/7, a student reported that someone had entered his room in Benton over the break and stolen his computer mouse and ethemet cable. January 9 At 10:57 a. m., officers assisted WestCarc with a possible heart attack on the first floor of Stillwcll. The employee was transported to Harris Regional for treatment. At 8:02 p. m., a student in Scott reported that some of her property had been destroyed as a result of an argument with another female student. Witnesses identified the student who damaged the property. The incident is referred to Housing at the request of the victim. At 9:01 p. m., officers stopped a subject who provided false information about his driver's license. Charges are pending. At 11:40 p. m., officers arrested a male student who had broken into 4 cars in the Ficldhouse lot and stolen property from 3 cars. The subject was also charged with resisting arrest. He was placed in the Jackson County Jail pending release on bond. HAVE YOU SEEN US?
