Whitmire Staduim. The Cats began the game with a 48-yard drive that ended with a Josh Jones 36- yard field goal and gave the Cats the early lead. However, the Mocs answered with a touchdown and taking the lead 7-3. On the next drive the Catamounts took the ball 75 yards and quarterback David Rivers scored from eight yards out to give the Cats a lead that would be preserved throughout the game. Rivers also began a string of 21 unanswered points for the Cats. In that time he threw a 28- yard touchdown pass to Lamont Seward and Walter Gary scored on a two-yard run. Chris Sanders to receiver Ronnie Strickland, Rivers hooked up with Michael Banks on a 81-yard touchdown pass that put the Cats back up by 17. Rivers added a touchdown run to help the Cats to a 38-21 half time lead. On the day Rivers completed 19 of 31 passes for 410 yards and two touchdowns He also had an interception. He also rushed for 15 yards and scored two touchdowns on the ground. Rivers is also the first Catamount quarterback to throw for two 400- yard passing games in a career. Rivers gives credit to his receivers for his success, stating, "The guys are playing great and the receivers are helping me out." Seward caught five passes for 132 yards and a touchdown. Banks caught six passes for 164 yards and a touchdown. Coming out of half time the Cats picked up where they had left off by scoring on their first possession of the second half with an on-sides kick. Jones capped the drive with a 19 yard field goal. Jones' field goal was the last time the Cats scored in the ball game. As the offense sputtered the defense had to make the big plays to preserve the victory. In the fourth the Moc's offense stepped up the pressure on the Cat's defense. They scored 15 unanswered points to close the gap to 41 -36. photo by Mark Haskett Justin Fryer was honored for his defensive performace against UTC. After a River's fumble late in the game the Moc's marched down the field to the Catamount six yard line. After taking a time-out the Mocs came to the line of scrimmage looking for the go ahead touchdown. Instead UTC's Sanders was picked off for the third time as free safety Justin Fryer swiped his second, ending all the hope for a huge upset. Rivers said of the defensive play, "Hat's off to our defense. They played clutch down the stretch." The Catamount defense did as it had done two years ago, intercepted a pass that could have handed them a homecoming loss. Head Coach Bill Bleil said, "We knew it would be a shoot-out.", and he added that the game was a "great win." This week the Cats travel to Lexington, Va to play the VMI Keydets. The Cats will be looking for their first road victory in two seasons. The last time WCU won away from Cullowhee was at VMI two years ago. Victories Propel Soccer into Conference Tournament by David Bartholomew Asst. Sports Editor Western Carolina soccer has arrived. Although to Cullowhee this may be old new, the rest of the Southern Conference is finding out this season. The Catamounts finished up the regular season with two impressive wins and could be seeded as high as fifth in November at the Southern Conference Tournament in Charleston. On Sunday the Lady Cats defeated the College of Charleston Cougars 3-2. The victory gave Western Carolina a 4- 4-1 record for the conference season. "This finish is awesome. We are really pleased with the teamwork we have shown coming down the stretch," head coach Debbie Hensley said. Kelly Barker put home her seventh goal of the season to put the game out of reach and ensure the Catamounts postseason place. The goal was the result of some very skilled maneuvering by the Lady Catamounts. Brandy Ossmann put on of her classic throw-ins to Morgan Forseman. Forseman then hit Barker in- stride, as the sophomore put the ball in the upper right corner. "We are finally starting to get good results from our throw-ins, and it's making a big difference for us," Hensley said. Freshman Jordan Howell recorded her twelfth goal of the season at the 36 minute mark. The striker broke away from Cougar defenders and scored with relative ease. Kristen Deon also added an important goal. Her early second half chip gave the Catamounts a commanding 2-0 lead. C of C managed to out-shot the Catamounts 13-11. Keeper Mandi Tinsley was in good form, however, making six saves. The victory was huge for the Lady Catamounts, however Friday's decision may have been more important. Western Carolina defeated the 5-2 Georgia Southern Eagles in extra time. Morgan Forseman came up with perhaps the biggest goal of the season. The sophomore recorded her fourth goal in the 94th minute to give the Catamounts a 2-1 win. Hensley was very impressed with her teams play. "This was the best win in the programs history and I am very proud of how the girls played today." The milestone goal came off a cross from Kelly Barker. A Georgia Southern defender tried to clear, but the deflection was put right into Forseman's lap and she did not disappoint. The Catamounts out-shot the Eagles 13-8. The Catamounts will now prepare for the tournament. This year the Lady Catamounts will be in much better position to impress. "Last year we had to play at Furman. and confidence was not high. This year will be much different." Coach Hensley commented. Western Carolina was competitive with every team. In their four conference losses, the Catamounts have been defeated by only one goal.
