  • October 11, 2000 Can't Vote? Use an Absentee Ballot by Mike Poston Staff Writer For those who cannot go home to vote, don't worry, there is a solution. By requesting an absentee ballot, students that are registered to vote in other counties and states can still participate in this year's election. In this age of technology, students and others can fill out a request for an absentee ballot online. According to the Jackson County Board of Elections, students can visit their website, www.smnet.net/jcboe and fill out a request online, print it out and send the request to the board of elections office. If a student lives in other counties in North Carolina the website has a link to a request that they can fill out, print and send to the proper board of election office. If you need to find out the address and information about other counties' board of elections office students can look in their local telephone book under governmental agencies. Students can also request an absentee ballot by physically going to their local board of elections office and filling out the form. Unlike Western Carolina University, the board of elections offices are open on Monday and Tuesday of fall break. Voting is an important part of our representative form of government and if students cannot go home to vote, absentee ballots can allow them to voice their opinions at the ballot box. The last day to request an absentee ballot is October 31, 2000, and students that receive an absentee ballot must complete and return the ballot by November 6, 2000 for the elections board to count the ballot in the election. The last day to register to vote in the state of North Carolina is October 13, 2000. If you would like to register to vote, call your local election board for more information.
