  • October 11, 2000 GET A LIFE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 11 Book Review Stopping for Death: Ellen Gilchrist's The Cabal and Other Stories by Virginia Culp Staff Writer At long last, a Southern writer who doesn't make me ashamed to live below the Mason-Dixon line has published a collection of stories whose sole theme is not the lecherous and degenerate nature of the new South. Ellen Gilchrist's characters are not rednecks; they are not bigots; they are not morons. They are intelligent, educated people whose southern roots run deep and whose families are, in the end, supremely important to them. Many of the stories in The Cabal and Other Stories, including the title work, deal with death; what sets them apart is the fact that they are not inherently morbid because of it. Naturally, a touch of morbidity creeps in now and again—death of a loved one is simply that sort of subject—but the stories are not about the dead: that is peripheral. The funeral and related obligations merely provide a reason for the rest of the family, friends, coworkers, etc. to get together, and Gilchrist's focus is on the interactions among vastly different people who have shared a common bond. Therefore, when a powerful and influential woman dies in Jackson, Mississippi, leaving behind a warring family and a lover half her age, the situation is ripe for fireworks. This, The Cabal, is the longest tale in Gilchrist's collection, a barefaced, unabashed look at the secret lives of the South's upper crust as well as a biting commentary on the long-faced antics that commonly pass for concern and grief. "During the service the five brothers sat with their wives and children wondering about how Jean had divided the estate. Her lawyer was not a close friend of theirs. They knew the estate was left to the family, but they didn't know in what portions. "The oldest son was thinking, There are five million dollars. If she left me my share it will cover my losses last year in the market. If she tried any funny business I'll contest it. Of course I will. "The second oldest son was thinking he should have gone to see her more often and been nicer about Mack. The third son was getting mean. She was undependable. She might not have taken into account all his alimony and child support. She might not have counted in that he had twice as many children as his brothers. The fourth son was spending his. He knew exactly the kind of J series sailboat he would buy as soon as the money was in the bank. The youngest son was simply grieving. Like Lauren Gail, he had lost a mainstay. ... He could barely care that the money would pay his gambling debts. He didn't care about the money. He wanted his mother back." The characters from "The Cabal" appear in several other stories; "The Sanguine Blood of Men" and "Hearts of Dixie" in particular deal with events surrounding the fiasco that marked Jean Lyles' funeral in the novella. Gilchrist's The Cabal and Other Stories is a triumph of literature. Her characters are smart and interesting, the situations in which they find themselves are endlessly intriguing, and her overall writing style is sophisticated and funny. Along with the themes of life, death, and love in the midst of both, periodic commentaries, both KIUmi (lilchrist humorous and poignant, about relationships and the differences between the sexes sneak into the stories, so subtly that one is hardly aware that they are there. "What do men want? No woman will ever know. Women want white silk slacks and makeup and chunky Donna Karan watches and good bodies to show off at the beach. They want the world to be beautiful and clean. They want music and romance and a chance at civilization. Men want those things too. But mainly they want to get laid." And finally, there are the words of wisdom that ring true for anyone who has ever experienced difficulty with his/her love life: "Things work out in the world. ... Touching someone you have always liked is never a bad idea. What can go wrong when two people really trust each other?" With The Cabal and Other Stories, Ellen Gilchrist has created a work with passion, compassion, and style; a collection of stories that will speak to men and women of all ages.
