  • U. S. Government Concerned Over Turkish Opium Ban Lift THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY MARCH 28, 1974 PACE 3 Center Pharmacy (CPS)—Government officials are "gravely concerned" about the possibility that the Turkish government may lift its ban on local opium production. Narcotics agents say a lifting of the ban will destroy the sub- WCAT Plans FM Service The student senate appropriated about $4,500 to radio station WCAT Tuesday night to purchase equipment to set up a FM radio service. The station will have to get approval from the Federal Communications Commission before it will be able to broadcast FM. WCAT manager "Butch" Davenport told the senators he had located an inexpensive unit needed for FM stations. In other action, the senate approved the constitution of the Interresidence Hall Council. Also, Galen Newsome was approved as public defender, and Tim Martin was approved as clerk of courts. A resolution asking for the dismissal of a professor who has been accused of slapping a student was introduced but referred to committee for study. statial progress made in curbing the illegal flow of opium and heroin into the I'nited States. According to an informed government source, however, the press reports of an immin- nent dropping of the ban are exaggerated and the announcement may not be forthcoming for several weeks, if at all. "There has been no formal decision and we're still hopeful that there will be none," said the official, An indication of the Turkish government's attitude was revealed last week with the announcement that they will start planting opium poppies in state experimental farms this month. The cultivation is for the pre= serration of high quality opium seeds and leaves the option open for the Turkish government to decide whether there can be an opium planting this summer. The announcement of a possible lifting of the ban follow*, ed the formation of Turkev's Women . . . .FROM PAGE 1 will stress contemporary issues, according to Dr. Alice Matthews, WCC assistant professor of history and coordinator of the women's studies program,, Highlights of the remainder of the program include campus appearances by Black poetess Nikki Giovanni and Mary Charles Griffin of Asheville, a mem-' ber of the President's commission on the status of women, and the celebration of women's week on campjs the week of May 6. ^K/®' i3ealurin<j: i new coalition government. All three parties in the October election had promised to lift the ban. In 1971 the IS persuaded the Turkish government to impose a total prohibition on opium production. To compensate, the IS pledged $35.7 million to help Turkish farmers convert from opium to cultivation of wheat, barley, and sugar beets, among other crops. Fifteen million dollars of that money has already been spent but farmers complain that this aid has not been reachingthem, A report made by Turkey's leading farm organization claimed a loss of about $8 million to farmers who had given up poppie production. As a result of the 1971 ban many legitimate opium farmers growing and exporting legal o- pium were put out of work, A total, rather than partial ban was insisted on, government spokesmen said, because "it was the most dramatic and en- forable."
