  • :#**k 1 itifrjtMfliM -nitaUtt ^ University Center to Offer Summer Concert Series by Jeffrey Sykes Staff Writer Beginning June 15th, the University Center and the Office of Continuing Education and Summer School will offer up its Tuesday Night Concert Series, which is a string of free concerts on the UC Lawn. The Bob Willoughby Swing Band will kick things off on the 15th. Known as the "King of Sleazy Piano" , Willoughby is a major force in old-time, jazz, Cajun and blues musical styles. He is returning to Western this year with a swing band, so all you hep cats need to pull out the zoot suits and take some dance lessons. Willoughby will be playing favorites for dancing and enjoyment. Rounder Records artists Jones and Leva, of Lexington, Va., will be here to perform old-time folk music on June 22nd. Having released 22 albums between them, this duo is a must see. Carol Elizabeth Jones is credited as having "the most beautiful raw mountain voice you will ever hear" by the 1995 All Music Guide. After a TBA week on the 29th of June, the series continues on July 6th with the unique sound of Con Clave, a blend of Salsa, Afro- Cuban, Jazz and Contemporary. Combined in 1989, Byron Hedgepeth, Ozzie Orengo and company blend these many styles to create rhythmic excitement crowds find contagious. This groups sounds are infectious. Don't miss out. July 13th will see Cullowhee's all time favorite reggae band return for its second gig this year. Mystic Vibrations, formed in 1993 in Columbia, SC, has toured with such reggae groups as Third World, Waiters and Inner Circle. Fronted by Ras Ric, of Little London, Jamaica, this band will hit you with classics and originals that leave you at the front of the crowd demanding more irresistible reggae vibes. Lil' Brian and the Zydeco Travelers will return to Cullowhee for a second date this year as well. As reviewed in the February 3rd edition of theWestern Carolinian, zydeco is a fast growing, danceable music form based on Creole music, and emanating from South Louisiana and East Texas. Lil' Bryan and his mates are called "one of the tightest and most musically accomplished units to emerge from the zydeco circuit." There will be a July 4th bash on Monday July 5th. The featured band is Hurri cane Creek and the event will include food and will be a mid-day festival. Thursdays will bring ice cream sundaes to the lawn from l-3pm. The sundaes will be a dollar a piece. The UC will also offer outdoor programs that range from $ 10 for students and $ 19-30 for non-students. The outdoor excursions will include rafting, climbing and °- '- ■JPI wJH ^r y ^^^t ;^-jF"w ^9-tufl 1^mflKmMlMm\m ^^^J 1 Brian Terry of Li 7 Brian and the Zydeco Travelers will be playing in July on the UC Lawn. caving. Con Clave Close-Up by Jeff Leatherwood Staff Writer Asheville jazz group Con Clave has enjoyed great critical praise during the past year. Using traditional tuned percussion such as vibraphone and congas, founding musicians Byron Hedgepeth and Ozzie Orengo have made names for themselves in North Carolina since merging their talents in 1989. Recently joining the elder Orengo, Ozzie Orengo, Jr., brought his innate sense of rhythm to the band and now plays timbales. Both Orengos are of Puerto Rican descent and are steeped in the arcane art forms of the Caribbean. Byron Hedgepeth is a formally trained percussionist with a masters degree from the University of Illinois and a wide range of tastes in world music. Three other acclaimed musicians comprise Con Clave. Keyboardist and composer Keith Davis brings his Atlanta music experience to the mountains, with exposure in such prestigious jazz venues as Artie Shaw and the Glenn Miller Band. The newest member is saxophonist and flautist Stuart Reinhardt, who has been favorably compared to John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter of Weather Report fame. No commentary would be complete without mentioning the only stringed instrumentalist of the group, Elliot Wadopian. The well-known bassist plays all manner of basses, from traditional upright bass to electric bass guitar. Wadopian's talents are not limited to jazz or Latin music, having explored progressive rock and blues among other areas. In an environment where bassists are often considered faceless and peripheral to the scene, Wadopian's exploits have challenged local bassists to experiment and broaden their styles. The Grammy Award- winning virtuoso plays both fretted and fretless six-string bass guitars with Con Cldve. Jaco Pastorius never had it so good. Con Clave comes to WCU as part of the University Center and the Office of Continuing Education and Summer School's Summer Concert series, punctuating Independence Day Weekend with an afterhoon show on July 6 .
