Continued on page 22 WCU Golf Finishes Eighth in Conference Tourney by David Bartholomew Asst. Sports Editor The Catamounts were challenged by tough conditions, a bitter rival, and an obscure rule, this weekend at the Southern Conference Tournament. Western Carolina shot a final round 309 to finish in eighth place overall, an impressive improvement from last year's 11th place finish. The tournament took place in Lexington, VA. The conditions were not ideal, as cold temperatures and strong winds adversely affected scores. "We played a pretty decent tournament, and we are happy with how much we have improved this season," head coach Johnny Wike said. "We got progressively better each day." Sophomore Greg Lewis finished first for the Catamounts, placing 14th overall. Lewis is the #5 seed for Western Carolina. "Greg had a great tournament, his contribution helped us out a lot," Wike said. Lewis, a Stanley, NC native, shot a 74 on Sunday to finish with a score of 227 or fourteen over par. Team Standings 1. Pat Beste shot a two over par 73 to lead the Buccaneers to their third consecutive Southern Conference championship. Jason Sugg also turned in a strong performance for the Catamounts, shooting a 73 on Sunday and a 230 for the tournament. Sugg placed 25th overall. "We got production from everyone at different times this year. It seems that if we ever had all put together strong tournaments together at the same time, we could have really challenged some people." coach Wike commented. The Cats were hurt by freshman Bryan Sangid's disqualification in the final round. The Johnson, TN native was disqualified for using an altered club. On the fifteenth green, Sangid missed a 5 foot put and showed his frustration by hitting himself with his putter. The bent putter was used to tap in the next shot. "I've been coaching since 1964, and I have never seen that kind of call," Wike said. "I'm sure its in the rules somewhere." WCU Finishes tl4. Greg Lewis 77 76 74 227 t25. Jason Sugg 78 79 73 230 43. The disqualification cost the Catamounts 6 strokes. "I think we can come back next year and really improve. Four of our five top players will be back. We're young and we believe we can compete." Senior Brad Hawkins finished his career at Western Carolina with a 241 for the tournament. Hawkins is from Greer, SC and has seen the program grow in his four years in Cullowhee. Coach Wike admires his work, "He's been a leader and a valuable member for our team."
