  • April 26, 2000 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 19 Baseball Seniors Plav Last Home Series by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Last weekend's three-game, non-conference series with the Elon Fightin' Christians was more than the final baseball series in Cullowhee for the 2000 season. It was also the final time that three Cat seniors would play at Childress Field/ Hennon Stadium in a WCU uniform. Outfielder Tracy Biggs, pitcher Aaron Kirby, and catcher Austin Smithwick played their final games at WCU's Childress Field/Hennon Stadium. Head coach Todd Raleigh had high praises for his three seniors on his youth- laden team. "Our seniors have done a great job. They haven't quit this season," said Raleigh. Tracy Biggs, a two-sports standout at WCU, was injured during fall workouts for football. Since that injury, he has been working trying to regain the lost time. "I still don't think Biggs has fully recovered from the injury," said Raleigh. "He wants to win and has been playing well lately. We missed is speed and I wish we could've had him all year." During his Catamount career, Biggs played in 120 games, posting a career batting average of .326. Despite having no homeruns to date, the Palm Bay, FL. native has nine career triples, fourth most in NOW SHOWING April 28 - May 4, 2000 Gattaca Crazy in Alabama The Insider Story of Us Flawless WCU CAMPUS MOVIES : CHANNEL 75 school history. Out of his 76 career base hits, 23 were for extra bases. Commenting on being honored in the pre-game, Biggs stated, "It kind of hit me. I realized that it was my last game." Good news for Catamount football fans, though. Tracy said he plans on returning to Cullowhee next fall for football season, followed in the spring semester by student teaching. His presence in the backfield will be a welcome sight for head coach Bill Bleil and staff. Biggs plans to graduate next Spring. The 2000 season hasn't had the results that senior Aaron Kirby had wanted. The right-handed pitcher from Hinsdale, New Hampshire entered this season riding a career junior year. In 1999, Kirby won career-high nine games, third high in the Southern Conference. His junior year saw the hurler post a career-low ERA at 1.62. This season, Kirby has struck out 27 in 52 and two-thirds innings. "Kirby isn't having the kind of year he wanted to. He's struggled. But, every time he goes out he tries to get better and he's never made excuses," said Raleigh. "It was emotional," said Kirby. "All the guys congratulating you. We've all had great careers here. I wish my mom could have been here, but I appreciate Charlie's [Wands] mom being there for me." He added, "It was good that coach let photo by Seth R. Sams WCU baseball team seniors (l-r) Tracy Biggs. Aaron Kirby, and Austin Smithwick. me finish out on the mound." Catcher Austin Smithwick has started 81 of 90 games played the past two seasons, including 30 this season. The Asheboro native has a career batting average of .321, including nine homeruns and 66 RBIs. "Austin has been a good, vocal leader. He's got a lot of smarts and knows what it's like to be a part of winning tradition," said Raleigh. He added, "He helped our freshmen pitchers a lot this year." Fight of the nine pitchers on WCU's roster are underclassmen, with six of those being freshmen. It was real emotionaL but I was looking forward to playing,"1, said Smithwick. During the pre-game honor, Smithwick said he "thought about all of the guys that had gone through this bejfore me." Sfone cold and Backlash coming Soo* It's only a few days away: Backlash and Stone Cold Steve Austin are coming to a PPV near you. After Monday night, Vince McMahon sent a message to The Rock and Austin regarding their history together. Needless to say, the footage did not show any friendship between the two, and Vince did well to attempt some desention among Austin and Rocky. I'm still predicting some sort of interference by Austin costing The Rock the Title, but whether Stone Cold will come back as a heel will be solely up to the fans. Everyone knows that Austin will not be cheering The Rock on, but will the vendettas held by both men result in HHH taking the Title to Summerslam. I'm honestly thinking HHH will retain the title, but of course, I could be wrong. I'm also wondering if anyone else will make a comeback Sunday night. I've heard rumors that Shawn Michaels or maybe even Mick Foley will return as commissioner and reinstate recently fired referee Earl Hebner to call the main event. Hopefully, there will be a better ending to this PPV than Wrestlemania. The Heartbreak Kid would ensure us of a great pay per view, no matter what other matches hold. Personally, I'm enjoying the feud between Chris Jericho and HHH. No matter what, I'm expecting this feud to go on for a while. After watching Raw for the past few months, especially after the arrival of Kurt Angle, I'm thinking that Stephanie and HHH's marriage could end sometime soon. Has anyone else noticed that Steph has had her eye on Kurt since he debuted? Look for a breakup and for Kurt be the cause. Nitro had a weak first hour, but the second hour was pretty good. Not only did the tag team match between Kronik and Buff Bagwell/Shane Douglas kick butt (too bad it ended in a screw-job), but Diamond Dallas Page defeated Jeff Jerrett to become a three time, three time, three time world champ! Tank Abbot also beat the crap out of some more announcers Monday night. The only one on Nitro that hasn't been beat yet is Schiavone, but I hope his time comes. Just don't show Madden without his shirt off again, even in a replay. One of the event's that was pretty entertaining, but kinda annoying was the David Arquette vs. Eric Bischoff. Arquette pulled of some decent moves, but mostly it was a punch and kick match with some interference. All in all, Monday was a good day for wrestling, not all trtat great, but decent nonetheless. I'm [just anxious for Backlash, and even a bit stoked for WCW Slamboree in Mjay. But to tide me ovejr until they, we have the local boys of ttye PWF. Horrible spring time weather caiused the cancellation of outdoor action this past Monday. But that didn't stop the action. Guido faced off against Herr Byrd in a Hardcore Title bout irt a smoking study lounge, no less. The sWo's Guido won the match, busting the Cferman open with a computer monitor. In another indoor (natch, J-Ro and Hardcore Harv faced off in a laundry room. J-Ro exhibited! his high-flying moves yet again, jumpjing off a washer to connect with Harv. [ With Last Call less than a week away, the PWF Superstars are gearing up. Fans can keep up with all ofj the action at the new cyber-space home df the Pan-Universal Wrestling Federation pwf.dhs.org/. The site includes ivideo highlight clips, profiles and pictures of all of the wrestlers, and the history of the PWF. Servo Says, HHH: How can you say that about my wife? She's a fragile flower. Jericho: Actually, Trip, Steph lost her flower long ago! ;
