  • APRIL 13, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 5 Sweep VMI 9-0, 13-4 Baseball Cats back in contention WCU's baseball team got back into contention in the Southern Conference this week with a 9-0, 13 4 sweep ol VMI on Monday and now faces a four-game road swing that includes a crucial confrontation with The Citadel on Saturday in Charleston, S.C. The Cats are currently 11-10 I overall and 2-3 in the was second in doubles. Wayne Tolleson was sixth in stolen bases and vVayne Harwell was seventh in the nation with a 1.17 ERA. Mark Reeser, who has taken over the top spot in hitting, was ranked ninth among the nation's top hitters with a .440 avenge. Reeser is now hitting .421. Hall, who has been in a slump during the mid-season span in which WCU lost 8 of 10 games, is the only WCU player likely to drop out of tile national rankings. As a team, WCU was fifth in team batting and second only to Georgia lech in team scoring. Behind Keeser's team leading average is Keith Ebersole hitting .410, Brown hitting .381. Billy Boyd hitting .361 and Wayne Tolleson hitting .325. Both Jim Reinicker and Don Williams, both used in selected games, also have hefty averages. Reinicker has hit .424 through 13 games and Williams has hit .364 in five games. Ebersole has already tied the single season home run record set by Ken Morgan in 1962 with seven homers to date, Ebersol had two against VMI, both going over 412-feet. Sophomore Rick Adair leads the team in victories with a 4-2 record, but freshman Harwell leads the team's ERA department having given up just five earned runs in 30 innings of work. Jerry Warren went the distance for the first time in his collegiate career Monday with a 9-0 shutout of VMI in the first game of the doubleheader and Danny I in Ha id improved his record to 2-0 by going the distance in the second game. Western travels to Erskine Wednesday for a single game before meeting The Citadel. WCU then goes to East Tennessee State on Monday. league and in sixth place. Students go to K.C. The WCU chapter of the Student Council tor Exceptional Students will send B group ot students to the National Convention for Exceptional Children in Kansas City. Mo. May 2 through May 5. Seven Students have signed up for the trip and the Council hopes to send as many as ten to the convention.
