SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 1947 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGE THREE Dr. Dann Gives Lecture-Recital Dr. Arnold Dann, noted organist of the All Soul's church, Asheville, and well known lecturer, gave an all-Chopin concert-lecture in Hoey auditorium, Tuesday evening, January 16. In spite of the small audience, jnd a cold auditorium, Dr. Dann's performance and interpretation of the music of Chopin was outstanding. His talk was enlightening and enjoyable to the very end. Before he began the printed program, Dr. Dann played the first movement of the Mozart Sonata I "to show the influence of former composers on the work of Chopin," he said. Then he gave his all- Chopin program, which included: Mazurka in A Minor, three impromptus, Prelude in D flat major, two waltzes, Nocture in F minor and The Maiden's Wish. For encores he played "Caprice" by Bridges, which he said "would show the influence of Chopin on later-day composers", and "Scotch Dance" by Beethoven. Dr. Dann said that his lecture was prompted by the recent movie on the life of Chopin, '"A Song To Remember." "Madame George Sand was a rather large person; not good looking, of dominating personality, kind and considerate—a character completely beyond the grasp of Hollywood's Merle Oberon, who played the part of Madame Sand in the picture," he said. Other contradictions he pointed out in the film were that Chopin's childhood life was very gay and happy. He grew up the idol of all Warsaw and left Poland of his own accord to make his way in the world, but to the very end of his life he was always surrounded by friends, music and gaiety. Nor was there ever, he said, the relationship between Chopin and George Sand that was suggested by the picture. Dr. Dann said that although Chopin's output of music was rather limited and he would probably never be ranked with the first- THE GRILL Complete Restaurant And Fountain Service Jimmie Galther, Prop. 34 Broadway BREVARD, N.
