  • Sports Western Carolinian/March 24, 1983 7 Sports Briefs In case you missed it, here'sthe 1982-83 all-Southern Conference first and second teams (with voting points in parentheses): First Team: (frontcourt)George Singleton. Furman (115), Kenny Trimier, Western Carolina (86), Kenny Wilson, Davidson (82); (backcourt), Troy Lee Mikell, East Tennessee State (129), Willie White, Tennessee-Chattanooga (129)... Second Team: (frontcourt), Winfred King, 1 asl lennessee State (62), Stanford Strickland, Tennessee- Chattanooga (50), Cliff Tribus, Davidson (48), Charles Jones, Marshall (48); (backcourt), Felipe de las Pozas, The Citadel (58), Sam Henry, Marshall (32). Player-of-the-Year: Troy Lee Mikell, East lennessee State senior guard (picked on 34 of 67 ballots)...Coach-of-the-Year: Murray Arnold, Tennessee-Chattanooga, second straight selection (received 30'/$ of 67 votes). ..Freshman-of-the- Year:Mike Huffman, Virginia Military Institute guard (selected on 35 of 66 ballots cast) Western Carolina University standouts Kenny Trimier and Quinton Lytle were named to the Southern Conference All-Tournament Team last Saturday night. The team, announced after UT-C defeated East Tennessee State, 70-62, in the championship game, has Trimier, a senior forward, on the first team and Lytle, a sophomore guard, on the second team. The Catamount duo were recognized for their outstanding play as the Cats advanced to the tournament semi-final with an 86-62 romp over Davidson and nearly upset 15th ranked UT-Chattanooga before losing 77-75 in overtime. Trimier was brilliant in both games as he had 24 points and nine rebounds against Davidson and 22 points against UT-C. In the two games he scored 46 points on 20 of 34 field goal shooting. Lytle scored 15 points against Davidson and was a principle reason the Cats nearly defeated the Mocs in the semi-final game. Against UT-C, Lylte led the Cats from a seven-point deficit to a six point advantage with five minutes to play. Lytle had 18 points before fouling out against the Mocs. The Mocs have two players on the all-tournament first team - Willie White, the tourney MVP and guard Skip Clark. ETSU's Winfred King and Troy Lee Mikell rounded out the first team with Trimier. Joining Lytle on the second team were Furman's George Singleton and Noel Gilliard and The Citadel's Felipe de las Pozas and Regan Truesdale. Western Carolina University freshman Clifford Waddy was chosen as one of the Southern Conference's top freshman basketball players last week in voting by the league's Sports Media Association. Waddy was named as one of five members of the 1982-83 Southern Conference All-Freshman Basketball Team. The 6-5 native of Staunton, V A, received the second highest total of voting points for the Freshman of the Year honors won by VMI's Mark Huffman. Waddy had 19 voting points. The guard-forward had several key efforts for the Cats and helped the team to a surprising 17-12 overall record, fourth place regular season finish and trip to the conference tournament semi-finals. While averaging 4.2 points a game, Waddy averaged 1.9 rebounds. His best game statistically came in Western's 62-54 overtime win at Furman (Feb. 9). Waddy had 12 points on five of five shooting and made a crucial steal late in the game to seal the win for the Catamounts. Joining Waddy on the team was Huffman, the Freshman of the Year who had 44 voting points while averaging 7.7 points a game in a starting role. ASU's Rod Davis (5.7 ppg.), Davidson's Jim 'McConkey (2.5 ppg.) and Furman's Dave Conrady (8.0 ppg.) rounded out the 1982-83 All-Freshman Team. CAT OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD TEAM OPENS SCHEDULE -- WCU's outdoor track and field team opened its 1983 season at the Georgia Relays this past weekend. Several individual performers did well for the Catamounts in the meet. Charles Weddington won the shot put with a 53-8 throw and Anthony James placed second in the long jump with a 23-11 showing. Miles Nicholson also posted a 48.8 time in the 400 meter run. The Cats were scheduled to take on Furman in a dual meet Tuesday, March 22 in their next action. TENNIS TEAM HOsTs UNC-CHARLOTTE NEXT MONDAY -- Western Carolina's tennis team will end its spring break Thursday at Carson-Newman and the next home mach will be next Monday (March 28). The Cats, 2-5 overall, will take on UNC Charlotte at 2 p.m. at the Reid Gym Courts and will have away mataches at Emory (March 29) and UNC Asheville (March 31). GOLF TEAM TO TAKE ON PC -- Western Carolina's golf team, 3-2 overall in dual matches, will host Presbyterian College this Thursday, March 24, at Maggie Valley Country Club. This coming weekend the Cats will travel to the Elon College Spring Tournament at the Alamance Country Club. That tournament will be held March 28-29. 3^ L ANNOUNCING PSYCHOLOGY OF SPORTS (PSY 293: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES) Fall '83 0 Prerequisites 1 Credit Hour/Class Hour 2 Sect. (Thurs., 3 p.m.; 6 p.m.) See Master Schedule of Classes Regarding Registration, Fall '83 Anne Wike was Named Player of the Week in the final week of lady Cat action. Wike •cored 17 points against UT-Chattanooga in the Woman's Southern Conference Tournament. The Lady Cats were eliminated by the score of 96-74. Powerlifting Up and Down During the past weekend the North Carolina Powerlifting championships were held, and it was a mixed bag of successes and failures for Western Carolina's lifters. The meet, which was held at Greensboro's West Guilford High School, was one of the most competitive state championships in recent years, especially in the upper weight classes. In the 148 lb. class. Kevin Kaga took home his second state title suprisingly easy. Kaga took a big lead in the first event, the squat, and was never threatened because of it. His effort of 501 easily out-distanced the second-place finisher who got 424. Kaga almost had the meet slip out of his hands in the bench press. He inexplicably could not budge his opening attempt of 236, but came back and got it on a second attempt. Kaga rounded off his day with an easy 451 deadlift. Ross Depencier was Western Carolina's other lifter, and he had much misfortune happen to him. Depencier placed fourth in a very talented field. What disappoints Depencier most is that the winning total is exactly what he (Depencier) attained in a meet last September near Charlotte. As Depencier said alter the meet, "there is nothing worse than losing to someone you can beat." Regardless of his finish Depencier still lifted some respectable weights. He finished with a 573 squat and deadlift, and the top bench press of his c|ass with 413.
