  • March 22, 2000 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 23 FIRST EVENT WIN Continued from back "Sarah played number one for us on Saturday," said Lott. "She started out slow, but picked it up on the back." Aiken, SC's Suzanne Shipley played in the number two slot for Lott on Saturday. The junior left-hander was the third Lady Cat to breach 80, finishing with 79 (40 and 39), placing her in a two-way tie for fifth- place. Sophomore Mary Faulk rounded-out the team scoring for WCU, shooting an 83, including a 38 on the back nine to finish in a three-way tie for eighth. Her 38 on the back nine was the third-best round of the day on the back, with the other two low- performances coming from teammates Blake (35) and Parris (37). Western Carolina's fifth entry was freshman Shelley Glenister. She placed thirteenth, shooting 45 and 43 for a combined 88. The challenge was held at the historic High Hampton Inn and Country Club. Located in Cashiers, NC, the 18-hole, par 72 semi-private course was established in 1928. The course was named as one of Southern Living Magazine's Top 20 Favorite Resort Courses in April-May of 1999. Saturday, Lott commented that, "the course played pretty short, with a lot of the long holes playing down wind." He added, "It's in awesome shape for this time of year. It played perfect today. The weather was cold, but not too bad once you got out playing." Described as "wooded, tight, small greens and lots of elevated changes with no sand traps," the High Hampton Country Club is a very impressive resort. The front nine played 3,079 yards, featuring two par fives and the par three eighth hole, which Golf Digest bestowed the title "One of America's Great Golf Holes." The back played a little shorter at 2,730 yards, including three par threes and only one par five. The Lady Catamounts will now prepare for their grueling upcoming schedule. Starting April 3, the women will play in three tournaments over a 13-day period. The next competition will be at Murray State in Kentucky and will conclude with the Southern Conference tournament in Charleston, SC. Sandwiched in the middle of these two will be an 18-team tournament at James Madison in Virginia. Lott also commented that the team will take part in an intra-squad match-play competition at the Waynesville Country Club. The winner will receive a plaque, as well as have their name put on the large plaque in the athletic department. tanning salon CM 293-3125 located across from post office beside cullowhee quick-stop NOW 10 BEDS! WCU junior Jason Sugg shot a six over par, 78 for the second straight day to finish at +12 for the tournament, earning a tie for 17th. Freshman Bryan Sangid was the only Catamount to lower his score from the first day, shooting a 78 compared to a nine over par 81 in round one. Sangid finished with a two-round total of 159 in the 31st position. Lee Cline, Mike Bowers and Andy Humble each increased their score by six strokes from the previous round. Cline finished tied for 42nd after shooting a second round total of 84. Bowers shot an 86 on Tuesday to place tied for 54th with a two-day total of 166. Humble found himself alone in 79th place after taking 94 strokes in the second round. Ben Lockwood of Jacksoville University won the event by shooting a two- day total of 143, one under par. Lockwood finished with a 69 in the second round, the only player to shoot under 70 the entire tournament. Western Carolina will next compete at the East Carolina Pirate Spring Invitational on March 24-25 in Greenville, NC. Baseball Drops Three of last Four Continued from back two runs in nine innings to pick up his first career win. Sophomore Wes Overbay took the loss dropping his record to 2-5. Goldston once again homered for the Catamounts, as he drove in the only two runs in the loss. Western Carolina's offense has been a bright spot. The Cats have scored five or more runs in a game twelve times on the season. Western has scored 10 or more runs eight times. The team has only two seniors on the squad. Despite the offensive power, the young Catamounts have been outscored by 68 runs this season. There is still a majority of the season remaining for the Catamounts to turn things around. The pitching staff must begin to put things together soon. Western Carolina will host the Furman Paladins for three games this weekend. The Paladins defeated VMI in a series last weekend and enter the series with a record of 7-16.
