  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN MEWS December8,1999 This Week: Pizza. Thief and Pyromaniac on the Loose November 30 A male student charged with indecent exposure in connection with an incident in Scott which was reported on October 8 was found not guilty in District Court in Sylva. In connection with the investigation of a sexual assault which reportedly occurred in Benton Hall on 11/19, the victim requested that no pros ecution be initiated and that the investigation be discontinued. Investigation reports have been submitted to the District Attorney for final review and approval. At 11:40 a. m., a female non-student reported that she was struck by a car while walking near the Walker A lot bridge at approximately 4:30 p. m. on 11/29. Injuries were minor, but the suspect vehicle did not stop. Officers impounded 12 vehicles for parking in campus after privileges were revoked. At 5:35 p. m., officers responded to a report of a suspicious odor on the ninth floor of Walker Hall. Officers found only evidence of tobacco smoke. At 9:00 p. m., officers and Computer Center personnel presented a program on computer and e-mail crimes in the lobby of Scott. December 1 As a result of a continuing investigation in connection with the report from November 29 on the misuse of funds from a student account, it was discovered that the student in charge of the club account had borrowed and returned money on two occasions. The District Attorney elected not to prosecute and the dishonest acts were referred to Student Affairs for disciplinary action. At 3:15 p. m., two students reported that articles had been stolen from their vehicles while they were parked in the Walker A lot 11/30 at 9:00 p.m. and 12/1 at 3:15 p. m. A license plate was stolen from one vehicle and two tail light lenses were stolen from the other. At 3:45 p. m., a student in Harrill reported that a speaker box was stolen from his room on the 3rd floor between 11/30 and 12/1. December 2 At 4:47 p. m., a faculty member reported the odor of smoke in Stillwell. Officers and Physical Plant employees detected the burning odor but could not locate the source. At 8:31 p. m., a student reported that someone had broken into his room on the first floor of Harrill through his window and stolen $ 120. The incident occurred between 5:30 p. m. and 7:30 p. m. Witnesses saw three males near the window and one was removing the screen. Police are seeking other witnesses and information on the identity of the suspects. At 2:45 a. m., officers assisted Housing staff with a male who was intoxicated and passed out in the lobby of Benton. At 2:51 a.m., officers responded to Walker where Housing staff reported that three male students were causing a disturbance. Officers spoke to the students and settled the situation. The incident is referred to Housing. December 3-5 At 8:45 a. m., a female student reported that her commuter decal was stolen from her vehicle while it was parked in the Reid lot between 11/27 and 12/2. At 1:00 p. m., officers arrested two female students on charges of financial transaction card fraud in connection. The students, over a two month period, allegedly placed $946 worth of unauthorized calls telephone calling card which did not belong to them. At 3:30 p. m. on 12/3, a parent reported that his daughter, a female non-student, was missing. Officers found her with her boyfriend in Leatherwood. At 2:15 a. m., on 12/4, officers arrested a male student for DWI near Harrill Hall. Intoxilyzer results were .11%. At 2:45 a. m. on 12/5, Housing staff reported a large double pane glass broken facing the courtyard at Benton. It appeared the glass had been kicked. At 3:40 a. m. on 12/5, officers found an intoxicated male non-student in the parking lot near the print shop. After identifying him and searching his vehicle, officers transported him to his residence in Sylva. At 4:40 a. m. on 12/5, a passing motorist reported that someone had set the banners on fire which had been hung from the pedestrian overpass on NC 107. No damage was done and suspects were not located. At 7:45 p. m. on 12/5, a driver for GJ's Pizza reported that 2 pizzas and 20 cassette tapes in a case were stolen from his car while it was parked in the'Administration Building lot between 7:20p. m. and 7:40 p. m.
