■ . WESTERN 4 CAROLINIAN NEWS December8,1999 It's About That Time Commentary by Seth R. Sams News Editor We've all come to that time in the semester that is worse than all others: The end. Students, at the end of a long semester, which they somehow perceived to be short, find themselves broke, stressed out, and bombarded with work, find that Christmas is around the corner, causing shopping centers and on-line catalogs to lure them in, asking for even more money that students already don't have. Despite this turmoil and stress, today I somehow found myself extremely calm, and I wasn't medicated, either. I was able to look back over the semester behind me, and even through the years that I have spent and at this university and this newspaper. This semester has produced some of the finest editions this publication has ever printed. We have covered issues that have caused controversy, and while this may not be looked upon favorably by some, to us it means that we've done our job. It means that we printed a factual, objecti ve, clear and concise article and someone who read it began to think about it. Yes, it happens: People read the Carolin- ian, get pissed at the Carolinian, and in the end, they've done exactly what we hoped and have formed an opinion, instead of sitting on the side lines, twiddling their thumbs, with no care for what happens at their university. The Carolinian has also performed better than in the past by covering a wider range of topics, from health to politics, local events to national tragedies. A morning disc jockey at Z91 this semester said something over the air to the effect of, "Why doesn't the Carolinian print something worth reading?" This was followed by a rather immature, almost bovine, chuckle. Well, maybe he hasn't read the Carolinian enough this semester. Or, maybe he just doesn't read. Bardo in an interview once referred to the Carolinian as a "student activity," and not a professional experience. Well, most of us put in between 30 and 40 hours a week around here, so, while Bardo's off touring the country at students' expense, maybe being Chancellor is just an "activity." In the following years, this staff will be long gone, but students who care about their fellow students having a say in how their university is run will continue to push this paper to the edge, reporting on issues that others would prefer left alone, and challenging the administration and the students with editorials and insightful columns. While our goal as student journalists is to build experience and a portfolio, our passion is making you think. Don't stop when we're gone. Phi Mu Supports Local Red Cross by Jamie Flynn Contributing Writer Some 41 members ofthe Phi Mu sorority participated in a Rock-a-thon in front of WalMart Saturday, Dec. 4, raising money for the Jackson County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Phi Mu raised more than $200 between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., which will go towards programs and services at the Red Cross. The money raised will assist in many Red Cross efforts including disaster relief, CPR certification classes, workplace training and health and safety services. Tables were located at both entrances to Wal-Mart while the students rocked to raise money. The tables were set up with brochures informing the public ofthe programs and services at the Red Cross as well as candy canes for those that gave donations. The sorority enjoyed spending the day raising money for a worthy cause. "We always like to help the community in any way we can and we are very glad to be able to help our local chapter of the American Red Cross," said Litta Adams, sister of Phi Mu.
