Sams These butterfly wings are just one example ofthe art that can be seen in the Chelsea Gallery. by Holly Rhodarmer Staff Writer On the cusp of a new millennium, the public is being bombarded with hundreds of events heralded as "the last of the millennium." Generally these are a little more than hype. "Goulash, Zooted" is a rare exception. The exhibit, which is billed as "a compilation of recent undergraduate works in observance of the closing of the millennium," is on display in Chelsea Gallery November 30-December 16. The Art Student League (ASL) assessed the contributed works and chose those best suited for exhibition. Jada Hansen, ASL president and organizer of the show, is pleased with the student support. "It was very exciting to see the enthusiasm, from freshmen to seniors," she said, "The exhibit was a big effort, but I am glad I could be a part of it." The works are the harvest of a fruitful season. The show is open to all students, from freshmen to seniors. The beauty of the show is that it is all-inclusive. Kim Falls, contributing artist notes, "It's a good show because it's not a competition, there's no pressure, and no award is given." The genres include oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, clay tile, ceramics, assemblages, collages, photographs, aluminum constructions, oil on wood, charcoal on paper, and painted wood with mixed media. If the show is celebrating the end of the millennium,or the successes ofthe millennium, it does a fine job. The artists pay Goulash, Zooted DATE: Through December 16 LOCATION: Chelsea Gallery homage to time honored styles, while interjecting new creativity into old traditions. The show is a pleasant balance. It contains paintings that draw from a bright palette, charcoals and black and white photographs that offer a milder yet just as intense artistic experience. Abstraction and realism are both present in the exhibit, as well as those few special pieces that incorporate the beauty of both worlds. The assemblages, sculpture, and ceramics add an extra dimension to the show, as well as showcasing the talents ofthe diverse art department. As an inspiration of hope for the new millennium, the exhibit is again a success. If the show is to be any indicator of the coming millennium, it will be a time of creativity and beauty. "Goulash, Zooted" demonstrates the ability for both introspection and celebration to co-exist. It solidifies ideas on life, color and texture. The show is a dynamic, eclectic mix. It infuses energy into the gallery. The show is a special combination, a unique blend of .raditional art processes and brand new perspectives. The show more than merits a visit by students and faculty. It is a showcase of ability that reveals human nature and thought as only art can do.
