  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY, MAY 6 TUBA brings two concerts May 21-22 A symposium for high school and college tuba and euphonium players and their band directors will be held at WCU May 21-22. Sponsored by the WCU chapter of the Tubists' Universal Brotherhood Association (TUBA), the symposium will feature master classes, clinics, and rap sessions with four nationally known clinicians. Two public performances have been scheduled during the symposium. There will be a recital by the Mid-West Tuba Trio May 21 at 8:15 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium. Members of the trio, who also will serve as clinicians at the symposium, are Harvey Phillips, J. Lesley Varner, and Daniel Perantoni. May 22 at 4 p.m. there will be a concert by a massed tuba ensemble made up of all symposium participants on the lawn of Hinds University Center. Both performances are free to the public. Phillips, a faculty member at Indiana University, is considered to be the foremost tubist in the US. Varner is a former tubist with the Knoxville Symphony, and now teaches at Ball State University. Perantoni is a past president of TUBA and teaches tuba at the University of Illinois. The fourth clinician is Earle Louder of Florida State University, who formerly served as euphonium soloist with the US Navy Band. The symposium will be held in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center, and will include displays by music publishers and instrument dealers. Registration for the event will begin at 9 a.m. May 21. Further information is available from the WCU Dept. of Music. AND THEY'ReToFF. Lambda Chi Alpha gave five a Saturday to winners in their sixth annual raft race down the Lambda Chi placed second. First place women's division went to Alpha Xi Delta, represented by Wanda Lane, Janet Milsap and Robin Jenkins. Second place went to Sigma Kappa. (Photo by Michael Gray) 29 HS students win in math Four WNC high schools and 29 high school students emerged as winners from the sixth annual WCU High School Mathematics Contest Thursday. Brevard High School took first place in the senior high school competition, followed by Hender- sonville High School in second place and T. C. Roberson High School, third. Winner of the junior high school competition was Canton Junior High School. The contest, which attracted 574 contestants and 55 faculty sponsors from 44 junior and senior high schools, was divided into algebra I, algebra II, geometry, and comprehensive Western Carolina University Chancellor H. F. Robinson presented $300 scholarships to the top eight winners in the comprehensive division who expect to attend WCU next fall. Certificates of merit were presented to the first five place winners in each di Accepting plaques on behalf of the winning schools were faculty sponsors Ruth Andrews of Brevard, Willliam E. Hawkins of Hendersonville, Barbara Nichols of Skyland, and Matilda M. Israel of Canton. School awards presented by Dr. Robert E. Stoltz, WCU vice chancellor for academic affairs. Individual division awards were presented by Dean John D. McCrone of the WCU School of Arts and Sciences, assisted by Charles C. Burrell, Dr. Joseph B. Klerlein, Baxter Norton, and Jack C. Sharp of the WCU mathematics faculty. Contest chairman is Ralph H. Willis, WCU assistant professor of mathematics. Funds for the scholarships were provided by WCU and its Patrons of Quality Program as well as by contributions from the Bryson City chapter of the American Association of Univer sity Women, Cashiers Plastic Corp., E. I. DuPont DeNemours and Co., Philip S. Dooley and Haywood Builders Supply of Waynesville, Skyland Textile Co. of Sylva, and the contest committee in the WCU Dept. of Mathematics. Kenneth Wood, director of institutional studies and planning, is chairman of the new [ committee. Members are James A. Ballard, Ms. Clatie Collins, ! Joseph Creech, Glenn Hardesty, Dr. James Hunter, Dr. Aaron Hyatt, Dr. Charles Martin, Clyde Martin, John McCracken, and Dr. Ermel Stepp. The director of the computer j center will serve as an ex officio | member of the new group and | will be its executive secretary Currently, Dr. Larry Morton is serving as acting director of the I center. Dr. Robinson said the commit- | tee will be concerned with general operating procedures, computer hardware, projects and priorities for work to be accomplished on the computer, and establishment of general policies concerning the center. Induction The Phi Omega Cast of the Alpha Psi Omega dramatic Fraternity has inducted seven new members at WCU. Alpha Psi Omega is the national honor fraternity for outstanding achievements in the field of drama. New members inducted are Mary Buker, Jessica Phelps, Margaret McLaney, Jeff Clark, Carl R. Smith, Stanley Poole, and Jonathan Ray. Students are elected to membership as a reward for their efforts in participating in plays staged by WCU. All seven students were cited for at least two years of outstanding service in one or more areas of theater at Western.
