  • August 26,1993 Western Carolinian Special Edition Page 9 Doc Watson opens '93 - '94 WCU cultural series A night of music by legendary guitarist Doc Watson, a performance of "TheTamingof theShrew"by the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and a concertby the Mozart Orchestra of Hamburg are among the cultural activities on tap at Western Carolina University during the 1993-94 academic year. Eleven programs are featured in the upcoming Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Series, which will get under way Monday, Aug. 23, with an exhibition of posters by Amnesty International in the gallery of WCU's Belk Building. The posters, representing 50 artists' depictions of Amnesty International's 30-year history, will remain on display through September 24. Also scheduled during the fall semester are a September 9 recital by soprano soloist Myra Vassian; a September 21 poetry reading by Li-young Lee; an Oct. 11 concert by the Moza rt Orches- tra of Hamburg featuring David Hickman on trumpet; and a November 3 production of "The Taming of the Shrew" by the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival. Doc Watson, the Grammy-winning guitarist from Deep Gap, will open the 1994 segment of the LCE Series with a January 27 concert in the Ramsey Regional Activity Center. The schedule continues with a reading by visiting writer Heather Ross Miller (February 15); a recital by Festival of Strings, four guitar soloists (March 8); a performance of the nationally touring play "From the Mississippi Delta" (March 31); traditional music of the Appalachians from the Sisters of the South (April 6); and the traditional British brass band sounds of Phil McCann and the Sellers Engineering Band (April, date to be announced). All programs will begin at 8pm. The Mozart Orchestra of Hamburg, "TheTamingof theShrew," Doc Watson, Festival of Strings and "From the Mississippi Delta" are LCE Star Attraction programs. Ticket prices for these events are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and WCU employees, and $3 for youths (ages 4-17) and WCU studentswith valid identification cards. Tickets for all other programs are $5 for adults, and $3 for youths and WCU students. For reservations or ticket information for all programs except those in the Ramsey Center, telephone 227-7234. Nike sponsors photography contest The "Capture the Nike Spirit" contest offers students the opportunity to win $1,000 cash and have their creativity recognized with a national Nike ad. To enter, students should submit photos that capture outstanding Nike moments or maybe they own or can find the world's oldest living pair of Nikes, or the most battered pair of Nikes in existence. How many pairs of Nikes (people attached) can students squeeze into a photo? Anything goes in the contest. Students should label their color print or slide film with a brief description of the Nike spirit they've captured including the who, when, what, where along with the student's name, school, address and phone numbers at home and school. Each month, the best entry will be published in "U."withthestudent'sname and campus credited. The winner of the month will receive $50 cash. All photos will be entered in the judging for the grand prize award of $1,000 cash, plus the winning photo will be published with a national Nike ad in the December 1993 issue of "U."
