  • J8 news September 24, 1997 ^Carolinian 'Click It or Ticket' Comes to End of Second Week Around The Statef- by NCDOT North Carolina law enforcement officers issued 3,672 seat belt and 355 child safety seat citations as part of the 1997 "Click It or Ticket" campaign. The citations are a result of 484 checkpoints and random patrols across the state from Monday, Sept. 1, to Sunday, Sept. 7. The numbers were reported by the law enforcement agencies in each county and compiled by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Besides cracking down on seat belt violators, law enforcement officers charged 1,066 people with driving while impaired. They also discovered 22,665 violations, including 429 drug charges, 9 stolen vehicles and three fugitives from justice. The "Click It orTickef seat belt program continued through Sept. 14. Its goal is to boost seat belt use in North Carolina—saving lives, preventing injuries and avoiding the massive health-care costs associated with traffic crashes. The following are a few of the statewide totals for the "Click It or Ticket" emphasis from Sept. 1 -7: • Total Checkpoint: 484 • Seat Belt Violations: 3,672 • Child Seat Violations: 355 •DWI: 1,066 • Speeding: 8,306 Total Violations: 21,757 Some totals for Jackson County: • Total Checkpoints: 3 • Seat Belt Violations: 7 • Child Seat Violations: 0 •DWI: 2 • Speeding: 37 Total Violations: 108 WCU Grad Among Police Corps Scholarship Recipients Beginning Training by NCDCC&PS Five Police Corps Scholarship recipients began their law enforcement training at the North Carolina Justice Academy in Salemberg this week. The students are: Wendy Bunch of Hobbsville, a graduate of Western Caro- lina University, sponsored by the Chowan County Sheriff's Office; Keith Eury of Concord, a graduate of UNC- Charlotte, sponsored by the Concord Police Department; Michael Montanye of Havelock, a graduate of N.C. Wesleyan College, Ted Sauls of Kinston, a graduate of East Carolina University and Sandra Vaughn of Reidsville, a graduate of East Carolina University, all sponsored by the Greenville Police Department. They are studying a new, specially designed program that combines traditional law enforcement skills with community-oriented policing techniques. They are also in the pilot class for a revised Basic Law Enforcement Training curriculum that will be implemented statewide. This training program was designed for the Police Corps recipients to help prepare them for their role as community policing officers with their sponsoring law enforcement agencies. The Police Corps Scholarship pro gram is administered by the North Carolina Law Enforcement Support Services (LESS), a division of the Department of Crime Control & Public Safety (CC&PS). This special course will ensure that local law enforcement agencies are receiving the best trained officers possible," stated Richard H. Moore, secretary of CC&PS. 'Through Police Corps, local agencies receive not only well-trained officers, but home-grown officers who in most cases are from the community and know the people." Scholarship recipients are chosen on a competitive basis from students throughout the state. Their college education expenses are completely paid for, up to the amount of $30,000, and their sponsoring agency is given $10,000 for each year of the student's commitment. In return, each participant in the program agrees to work with their sponsoring agency for four years upon his or her graduation. These five students will complete their training on December 19, 1997, and report to work at their sponsoring law enforcement agency.
