  • liriiciri Two Titles Twice as Nice for WCU Track Cats by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Two months after capturing both of the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field titles, the Western Carolina track teams repeated in the Outdoor Championships, taking both titles in convincing fashion. Both squads took the lead on Friday and maintained their advantage all the way through. The men won the title by 59 points over ASU, while the women dominated, taking the title by 84.5 points. Head Coach Danny Williamson, who, for the second time this year, was named Coach of the Year in the Southern Conference, called this past weekend's performance, "a total team effort." "This was something that we worked at all year long," said Williamson. "They (the teams) took a workmanship attitude. We went in strong the first day and set up ourselves to get the titles. | "We have a lot of other coaches that do a great job," commented Williamson on his Coach of the Year honor. "It's not only an award for me, it's for our entire coaching staff. Also, our kids have to go out and perform, so that award is for all of us." The men's title ended a SoCon 21 -year streak that had seen either VMI or Appalachian State winning the title. Phillip Johnson was named the meet's r~ Photo courtesy of WCU Track & Field The WCU Track & Field teams celebrate their second, dual championships of the 1998-99 season. Western is now the defending Indoor and Outdoor Southern Conference Champions. "Most Outstanding Performer," and rightly so. Johnson captured three individual crowns, winning the shot put (51' 6.5"), the discus throw (169' 3"), and the hammer-throw, with a mark of 179' 3". "Phillip did an outstanding job and he deserved to be the athlete of the meet," stated Williamson. "He was a leader all year long for us. He got us started off real strong." Joe Hyman pulled a hamstring in the last leg of the 4x 100 M relay. However, instead of simply stopping, Hyman hopped the last 70 meters to score because he knew that he crossed the line, they would earn some points. A k a b a Gillespie and Josh Langley both also went down with injuries. In addition to Johnson's first-place finishes, Ryan Lewis won the individual title in the pole vault with a mark of 16' 4.75", and Brad Berry won the men's decathlon. Western's women's team won 12 of the 22 events, to win the title. Appalachian State's Mary Jane Harrelson broke three Southern Conference records, and was named the meet's Most Outstanding Performer. However, it just goes to prove that track & field is a team sport, as the Cats scored more first and second place finishes, giving them the title. Kamilah Gabriel continued her successes, winning two individual titles (100 M high hurdles and the 400 M intermediate hurdles) and scoring 40 points for the Lady Cats. She was also a part of the 4x400 meter relay team that placed first and set a new conference record at 3:46.75. Even with Gabriel's success, Williamson pointed out Altavise Franklin. Franklin won the heptathlon, which is seven events over two days. She also, in addition to that, competed in seven other events, scoring in three of them. Others winning events for the women included Rosalyn Hood in the long jump, Valerie Jalajas in the pole vault, Valerie Metz in the shot put and hammer throw, Keeya McManus in the 400 meter dash, Photo courtesy of WCU Track & Field The Western Carolina Track & Field coaching staff (I -r): Head coach Danny Williamson, Assistant coaches: Jack Wakely, Sam Barall, Shannon Rodden, Jarrett Foster, Stephen Moss.
