Arts & Entertainment The Western Carolinian Page 4 Foxfire Begins Run In Niggli Theatre Hector Nations, (left) played by Sean Parker, gives his son Dillard, played by Brltt Corry, a rather harsh lesson in responsibility in WCU's production of "Foxfire." The play, with Heather Pltlllo (right background) as Annie Nations, concerns an Appalachian mountain family under pressure by developers to sell land that has been in their family for generations. Production dates are April 13-17 and 20- 23 in WCU's Niggll Theatre. Tickets are $5 for students and senior citizens and $8 for other adults. (WCU photo by Mark Haskett) Annual River Festival Begins Saturday The fourth annual Tuckasegee Riverfest. featuring a river cleanup and canoe and kayakrace will be held Friday and Saturday. April 16 and 17. The Riverfest is sponsored by Last Minute Productlons.a WCU y student organization, and Nantahala Outdoor Center. The river cleanup begins at 11 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers will meet in front of Hinds University Center, where they will divide into groups and clean the river in rafts, canoes, or on foot. "Our goal Is to remove trash and other debris from the Tuckasegee between East LaPorte and Barker's Creek," said Laura Rabb of the LMP Outdoor Committee. Rafts, canoes, cleanup materials such as trash bags, drinks, and snacks will be provided to volunteers during the cleanup. Afterward, there will be a free barbecue for volunteers. The Cullowhee Water Safari begins Sunday at 9 a.m. with registration at the East LaPorte put-in. The 5.5-mlle race will begin at 10 a.m. and will finish at Cullowhee Dam. The 19-mile race will begin at 10 a .m. at the Caney Fork put-in and will finish at Barker's Creek Bridge. There are two mandatory portages at Cullowhee and Dillsboro Dams. The race covers mostly Class l-lll white water. The Cullowhee Water Safari races are open to canoes and cruising kayaks. To obtain the release of the Jailed party, each organization will ave to arrange ball. The amount they succeed In getting will be matched by LMP and used to fight leukemia. Also on Thursday will be the Organizational Affairs booth display. Any interested organization will be able to set up an informational carnival theme booth on the UC lawn at 3:00 p.m. to be viewed by the student body. An award will be given for the most original booth. Dinner on the lawn will also take place on Thursday, at 4:30, with an Interesting addition. LMP will sponsor two caricature artists who will be doing free portraits of students on request. Students, as well as groups of students, who would like to have their portrait made are encouraged to do so from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Also taking place during dinner on the lawn will be a free concert by the Jabberwocks, a group that has been touring the college circuit extensively. On Friday the 15th, LMP will sponsor a second concert. The Sponge Tones will be performing at 8:00 p.m. on the UC lawn. This Charlotte-based band plays a variety of music, mainly from the sixties and seventies. They play their own original music, as well as old favorites, such as the Beatles. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
