  • PIECE Western Carolinian June 13, 1985 Page Five Li Zhaotung Vice President of Yunnan University. "We went to boost the economy and national unity and work for world peace." President Yang has indicated that he will issue an invitation for a visit to Yunnan University in the fall for a WCU party to be headed by the Chancellor. The purpose of the visit would be to complete the details of our newly executed agreement in Yunnan Province. I've found Mr. Yang to be an open, interested and friendly man who hopes to quickly strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperative programming between our universities, I believe we can accomplish a great deal both in China and our campus through our new agreement. We are looking at the possibility of expanding economic and cultural development in addition to the educational exchanges which are already underway. Itappearsto me that there is a good future in the relationships of these two sister institutions. Two Chinese botanists conduct research at Western while WCU's biology department head, Frederick Harrison, does research at Yunnan University. In summer, WCU biology professors J. Dan Pittillo and James Wallace travel, lecture and do research in China. This is inspired by the ecological similarities of the Appalachia and Yunnan province. In October, Chancellor Robinson, Vice-Chancellor Stoltz, and Dr.Hulbert visit Yunnan. On October 15, an agreement is signed regarding exchange of personnel between the two universities. In fall, Dr. Marilyn Jody travels to Yunna University. She becomes the first representative of either institution to teach full-time. also in fall, Hu Zhihao, Li Shushen, Ma Yuntao and Ho Li come to WCU to pursue their respective fields. At spring commencement exercises, May 12, 1985, Chancellor Coulter announces the signing of an addendum to the original agreement signed by former Chancellor Robinson. He refers to Yunnan and WCU as "sister universities." Also at commencement, the new president of Yunnan Univesity, Yang Guang-jun, addresses the graduating class. Sn fall, Chancellor Coulter and Dr. Ellerd Hulbert will visit China again while we receive 5 or 6 Chinese scholars.
