  • PAGE 18/FALL SPECIAL ECHTION WWCU-FM The best equipment and the best music [The Be-st Music? You bet, according to WWCU general manager Dave- McElvein. "We- have Ihe- be-st staff and the be-st equipment of any station west of Asheville, ami that's a winning combination." WWCU-FM. the radio voice of the students of WCU, operates daily on a frequency of 91.7 mh/ with an authorized power of 10 watts. According to McElvein, radio made- its first appearance- when WWOO staggered off to a start in the- fall of 1947, broadcasting tin about an hour each day. Since- thai time, tin- station has become a highly sophisticated operation, re-quiring about 20 students to operate. "One unusual aspect of out station," says McElvein, "is that all of our staff, with the exception eil ihre-e- or four administrative positions, an- volunteers. Ii is the- dedication of the stall that keeps us em the- air for 16 hours a day." A typical day of programming at the- station includes an all day top-40 formal ssith an hour of classical music al noon. A live- talk sinus is slated for the earls evening, followed by progressive and album rock. ".It's hard to please i-si-ryiilie all the- time-." savs McElvein, "but we think the- majority e>i students an- pleased with the station." WWCU is mil ssithoul its problems, though. A recent change- in FCC rules and regulations calls lor all 10-wati stations tei be- phased out over an 18-month to two year period. This ruling has puzzled tin- heads eil small high school anil college radio Stations around Ihe country, because most of them cannot obtain ilu- large amounts of money (reportedly tens of thousands of dollars) to buy high powered transmitters ami the accompanying timers ami bases which would me-e-l the ness lasss. "There are- about 500 stations thai I.e. 'the- 10-watt category, and many of them will be. lot ceo to close down altogether," said McElvein. "We are searching for funds now," he continued, "but we still hase- tui definite committments." McElvein said the- most important factor in keeping WWCU on the- air is not the money or the equipment, but student participation. "This station runs on volunteers, and without them, we just wouldn't be able to ilo it." Any student interested in joining the WWCU staff should call the station at 293-7173 or attend one of the 7 p.m. Wednesday night staff meetings.
