  • Cam i man Cats All Wet; Drowned out by UNCA by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina University Catamount baseball team was one game away from a seasonal sweep of the UNC Asheville Bulldogs yesterday. Mother Nature and Cullowhee rains prevented it, as the Bulldogs beat the Catamount, 14-8. It took three hours, three minutes, and five Catamount pitchers to get through Tuesday's game at soggy Childress Field/ Hennon Stadium. Following the game, head coach Rodney Hennon commented, "Bottom line, they just played better baseball than we did. They simply beat us." "I think that we swung the bats well. We had 16 hits and eight runs; when you do that, you should win. We just didn't pitch and didn't play defense well," said Hennon. Robbie Hoover was saddled with his first loss of the year. He didn't start, though, as for the second-straight game, a freshman starter was chased in the second inning. Wes Bentley only recorded one inning, allowing one run on four hits, walking three. Steve Harris led the Catamounts at the Baseball Adds Six Signees Sports Information Western Carolina University's baseball program announced the signing of six student-athletes to athletic grants-in-aid and the National Letter of Intent during the recently concluded spring signing period. Making official commitments to WCU for 1999-2000 were (in alphabetical order): E.J. Brower, OF, Ramseur, N.C. (Eastern Randolph High School) Todd Buchanan, OF, Roswell, Ga. (Roswell High School) Jared Burton, RHP, Westminster, S.C. (West Oak High School) Chad Emory, C, Asheville, N.C. (A.C. Reynolds High School) Jeremy Hamrick, INF, Shelby, N.C. (Crest High School) Chip Pennell, INF, Swannanoa, N.C. (Owen High School) The six spring signees will be joined by four recruits inked during last November's early signing period: Alan Beck of Hudson, N.C. (South Caldwell High), Steve Bray of Branford, Conn. (Branford High), Kris Cline of Asheville, N.C. (A.C. Reynolds High), and Jonny Adrianoff of Olean, N.Y. (Portville High). The Catamounts, under the direction of second-year head coach Rodney Hennon, are members of the NCAA Division I Southern Conference. plate, going 2-for-4, including his homerun number 18, with three RBI's. Eric Johnson extended his current hitting streak to 23-games by going 2-for-6. During this streak, EJ has gone 44-for-100, a .440 batting average. He is approaching the school 27-game hitting streak of Scott Lyman, which was set in 1992-93 season. EJ also now owns the single-season record for stolen bases. He currently has 37, with the previous record being 35. This past weekend, WCU (27-16-1) swept the VMI Keydets in Lexington, Va., winning 18-5 and 10-4 on Saturday, and 7-4 on Sunday. Sunday, the Catamounts used a great performance by Aaron Kirby (6-4) in relief to defeat the Keydets, 7-4. Kirby went eight innings after starter Brad House was chased in the second, scattering six hits, and surrendering one, earned run, while striking out four. WCU led 2-0 after the first inning, but VMI battled back, getting one run in the bottom of the first, then expanding their lead to 4-2 in the second. Western posted the go-ahead runs in the top of the seventh. Johnson led the Cats at the plate, going 2-4, scoring a pair of runs. Steve Harris had three RBI's. Despite going only l-for-3 on Sunday, freshman Morgan Frazier went 8-of-12 for the weekend, with seven RBI's and scored three runs. In the second game on Saturday, 'Mo' went a perfect 4-for-4, and in the first game where he tallied six RBI's. In Saturday's finale, WCU fell behind early, then scored runs in all but the fifth inning to win the seven inning game, 10- 4. Freshman Wesley Overbay (4-3) earned the win, going the distance, scattering four runs (all earned) on five hits. Frazier's 4-for-4 performance paced the Cats at the plate. Charlie Wands also helped his on-base percentage, drawing game-high three walks. David Pember finally got some run support, as he upped his record to 7-3 in Saturday's first game as the Catamounts beat VMI 18-5 in a shortened NCAA 12- run rule game. The game was called after the seventh inning. Pember allowed five runs, three of them earned, on 11 hits, while fanning eight in the win. VMI did all of their damage in the second and third innings, scoring all five runs. The Catamounts played long-ball with the Keydet pitchers, going yard five times. In all, seven homeruns left the park for the Cats on Saturday. WCU Bookstore ATTENTION STUDENTS !! DO YOU HAVE RENTED TEXTBOOKS?
