  • Iinian Rugby Season in Review by John Nelson Contributing Writer All that can be said is that Western Carolina Rugby is going places. In the small time that WCU-RFC has been around, their ability and reputation has grown rapidly. Since 1990, this year's team has built the path for future success by establishing recognition with SGA for funding and gaining sponsorship from local area business. The most important achievement has been the record-breaking season Western has had against Division I teams such as N.C. State, South Carolina, and UNCC. The fall semester was the time to build skills, train rookies, and play tougher opponents than what would be faced during the regular season in the spring. With that Western, being a Division II school, played six Division I teams with great success and plenty of learning. Western played a strong N.C. State side to a 15- 5 loss improving on a45-point loss against them from the pervious year. The Catamounts improved from then by beating UNCW at Wilmington for the first time ever. The Ruggers continued their year by defeating Auburn University in a 13-12 win with a mostly rookie A side showing the growth and ability of Westerns new players. One of the biggest successes was the 17-17 tie with the Conference leader for Division I, UNCC, coming back from being down at the half 17-3. But all of that was preparation for the season. Western finished the Winter with a game against Appalachian scoring a record breaking 8 tries in one game, winning 48-14. The regular season started off with a bang as the Ruggers beat Harvard and Davidson convincingly. The Catamounts entered the Black Rose Tournament and won against University of South Carolina and the Citadel while losing a close one to University of Georgia. Following the long tournament Western suffered their first conference loss to Furman with time to learn from their mistakes and finish the rest of the season strong. The Catamounts traveled to Guilford to defeat them 47-0 playing with intensity and determination to be first in the SEC. Western fell to a heart breaker of a game to a very good Elon side who ended up first in the conference. But Western finished in style defeating Appalachian for the third time in a row in Boone with the best team effort ever seen in the history of the club. The Ruggers ended their season 4-2 and third over all in the SEC. RETIRED OR SEMI-RETIRED PERSONS WELCOME! Monday, head women's soccer coach, Debbie Hensley started off this barrage of firsts by signing the first women's soccer recruit in Western Carolina history. Nardia Moore, a midfielder from Fountain Inn, SC, was the first player to visit campus and to commit to this freshman program. "It is always great to sign the first recruit and Nardia is a great player to begin building our program on," stated Hensley. "She's big and strong and I expect her to be an impact player for us and in the Southern Conference." Moore is a three-time all-region selection at Hillcrest High School. She has also played for the Upstate Blazers club team out of Greenville, SC, where she led her team to the South Carolina State Championship six times. Recruiting players to a first-year program with no history can prove difficult. However, having Hensley, who herself was a part of two first-year programs (Georgia Southern and Furman), has the experience and knowledge to influence players. "I take my own experiences and tell them of the traditions they can start and use that to persuade them to come to Western," explained Hensley. This, in addition to having coached Moore in the Olympic Developmental Program in South Carolina for four years, helped her convince Moore to become a Catamount. WCU soccer is still in the middle of tryouts to help fill out the roster. "They're [tryouts] are coming along good," commented Hensley. "The girls are working hard. It's looking positive right now." Hensley will continue to recruit players outside of WCU. She hopes to wrap- up that process within a month. INTRAMURAL POLLS FINAL VOLLEYBALL POLLS MEN'S TOP 10 WOMEN'S TOP 5 1. Crochity Old Men 1.
