  • CanHinian Baseball Struggles But Wins Series vs. Davidson Two Weekend Wins Place Cats 2nd in Conference Photo courtesy of Sports Information Catamount shortstop Chris Moore is leading the Catamounts and the Southern Conference in homeruns (12) and slugging percentage (.851) this season. He is also second in the SoCon in runs scored (35) and RBI's with 31. by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor After a blanket of spring snow fell over the mountains of North Carolina, Western Carolina played three games of baseball, regained and lost the lead in the Southern Conference, and found a few problems with their game. WCU won two of the three games played against the Davidson College Wildcats this past weekend in Cullowhee. After this weekend, WCU is 17-9 overall, 6- 1 in the Southern Conference. In the series finale Sunday afternoon, the Catamount hitters tallied 18 hits en route to a 15-7 win over the Wildcats in nine innings. Freshman Wesley Overbay was credited with the win after starting. He scattered 10 hits over six and a third innings. He gave up seven runs, five of those earned. Robbie Hoover pitched two and two thirds of hitless baseball in relief. Chris Moore led WCU at the plate with a double and four RBI's. Sophomore Charles Thomas continued his good hitting trend by going three-for-four, scoring four times. Speaking of hitting streaks, Catamount catcher Austin Smithwick extended his hitting streak to 12 games. It is the longest streak for a Catamount batter this year. During this stretch, Smithwick has a .390 batting average with five doubles. This streak has increased his seasonal batting average by over .200 points. Eric Johnson also had a good series, going five- of-12 with three doubles, one homerun, and three RBI's. In Sunday's first game, Davidson didn't look like one of the Southern Conference's lower echelon teams, as they overcame a 8-6 deficit to win 11-8 in the scheduled seven innings. Western looked like they were going to have a cake-walk with the struggling Wildcats as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off of Davidson's leading pitcher, Wes Self. However, Davidson answered WCU's five-run inning in the top of the third inning, chasing Western starter Aaron Kirby from the mound following a homerun. The relief pitching didn't offer head coach Rodney Hennon much relief. Erik Turnrose surrendered two long balls to the unproductive Wildcats batters. Turnrose was saddled with the loss, dropping his record to 2-1 on the year. Thanks to Mother Nature, Western could only play one game on Saturday. Even though WCU could only get one in, it was a historic game—it was the 500th contest played on Childress Field/Hennon Stadium. The win was Western's 367th since the facility opened in 1978. In the scheduled nine inning contest, David Pember scattered ten hits and two earned runs while striking out seven and walking five in a complete game performance. Western did the job at the plate, hitting four homeruns and tallying 11 hits. However, the defense struggled, committing three errors! Chris Moore hit a pair of homeruns, increasing his total to 12 and pushing him further into (he lead in the Southern Conference. Western will play their next four games on the road, starting with a non-conference match-up with High Point on Wednesday before traveling to Charleston, SC, for a three-game set with The Citadel Bulldogs. Both the Bulldogs and Catamounts will be looking to keep pace with the league leading College of Charleston Cougars. WCU's next home game will be on April 6 against nationally-ranked Clemson. r ¥111) Bi juthern Conference aseball Standings Conf Overall PCT Strk. 1. Col. of Charleston 11-1 20-10 .667 W3 2.
