Students Papers Presented at Virginia Conference by Don Costello Managing Editor In early March, two Western Carolina students traveled to Emory, Va., for a three- day conference at Emory and Henry College to present research papers. The Southern Regional Conference was sanctioned by Pi Gamma Mu, an international honor society in social science. Fred Fisher, a graduate student in WCU's Master of Public Administration program and graduate president of WCU's Lambda chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, presented a paper entitled "Corporate Social Responsibility," which dealt with the changing dynamics of the global economic market. Jodi Key, who graduated from WCU in December, presented her paper "Aristotlean Analysis of Reagan's Lead- in at Nominating Convention." Key's research concluded that Ronald Reagan's presidency used the media to manipulate public perception of the issues. Eighteen papers were chosen for the conference. Each paper was presented in front of a moderator and a professor who offered constructive criticism on the basic premise of the paper and how research could be enhanced, said Fisher. "Being given the opportunity to meet with colleagues from other institutions is a very beneficial vehicle for expanding knowledge and understanding of how academic endeavors prepare you for real world situations," Fisher said of the value of the conference. The papers were chosen through a selection process similar to that of Western's Undergraduate Research Conference. Pi Gamma Mu's faculty adviser, Dr. Gordon Mercer, chose the papers and relayed them to a selection committee for consideration at the conference. "Both papers were extremely well received and generated a lot of discussion and questions," Mercer said. Western Carolina University is part of the Southern Region of Pi Gamma Mu. The region includes more than 30 institutions in seven states in the south. WCU hosted the first Southern Regional Conference five years ago and has tried to send students each year. "Scholarly exchange is the heart and soul of university and academic processes," Mercer said. "The important thing is giving Western students the opportunity to hear papers from other schools."
