Yet, his new job is a totally new experience. On March 13, 1989, Bobby Setzer was named the university's new Athletic Director by Chancellor Myron Coulter. Setzer replaces Terry Wanless, who resigned in January. The job of Athletic Director carries many duties. In an interview, Setzer described his duties. "Being here at Western so long, I even hear from students wanting us to help them find a job. It's not just directing athletics, it's also serving the student. Basically, though, my job is directing athletics; the budget, hiring coaches, coordinating ticket and marketing sales, sports information; but it goes much farther than that. It's working with students." Setzer said that most of his ideas to improve the programs come from the coaches. He also stressed that there is another important side to his job. Setzer likes to mingle at the games and meet people. He goes everywhere, from the tailgates to the stadium. "The thing that is most important to me at Western Carolina University-and this is not bull-is the student body. They're number one with me," he said. Setzer has been a resident of western North Carolina for almost all of his life. He was born and raised in the Maggie Valley area of Haywood County. Waynesville High School granted him his diploma in 1950, where he was an all-state selection while playing football. In 1951, he entered Western as a lineman playing for the legendary Tom Young. He spent two years in the Army and then returned to graduate in 1957. He also earned a Master's Degree in Education at Western in 1961. After receiving his bachelor's degree in 1957, he was chosen to be an assistant coach and an instructor in Industrial Education. He has served as assistant coach under Dan Robinson and close friend Bob Waters. Prior to his appointment as AD, he spent the last 27 seasons as assistant coach, associate professor, and coordinator of the industrial distribution academic program for the School of Technology and Applied Sciences. Throughout his career, Bobby Setzer has managed to teach a full academic load while carrying out his athletic responsibilities. He's helped in the development of many of Western's All- Conference and Al-American stars such as Steve Williams, Frank Stankunas, Danny Williams, Keith Elliott, Kenny Lewis, Bobby Peche, Scottie Arant, Geno Segers, and current NFL players Louis Cooper and Clyde Simmons. He also revived the Catamount wrestling program and achieved a 44-31 record in six seasons. During his football career at Western, Setzer was twice voted an All-North State Conference lineman for the Cats. He was the team captain for Western in 1955. As a faculty member of Western, Setzer has received awards, too. The Western Carolina Student Government Association (SGA) elected him faculty "Citizen of the Year" in 1982. Also, he received the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award in the School of Technology and Applied Sciences in 1984. Other than the two years he spent in the Army, Setzer left Western briefly in 1963 to go to East Rutherford High School in Forest City, NC. There, he served as a teacher, athletic director, head football coach, and assistant principal. He compiled a 30-13 record in three years with a conference title and state championship runner-up. Setzer says he is very happy living in the area. "I love Western Carolina University. I love the mountains. It's a great place to raise a family," he stated. The area is very conducive to the activities he likes outside of his job. Setzer, as do many of the other coaches, likes to fish. He goes to the Eagle Creek area near Fontana with his three boys to fish. With a cabin on Bear Lake, a few minutes away, he can escape to do something he really enjoys-water skiing. Setzer also has some dogs and enjoys hunting when he gets time away from his duties. Bobby Setzer is married to the former Anne Bridges of Ellenboro, NC and has four children; Neil, Laura, Steve, and Joel. All have graduated from Western Carolina except Joel, who graduated from North Carolina State. The Setzers also have four grandchildren.
