  • H i WWSt Ik 4 > Defensive end coach Kent Briggs observes two hard-working Catamounts go at it during a recent workout. The 1983 WCU football squad will play the annual Purple-White game at 7 p.m. in E.J. Whitmire Stadium. A nnual Coaches Poll Furman Picked To Capture Title Russ Randolph Sports Editor Boone, N.C. - The 1982 Southern Conference football championship race was an extremely close affair with Furman winning the title by a one-half game margin over Tennessee-Chattanooga. The annual poll of the league's head football coaches and sports information directors indicates that the conference is in store for an equally tight race for this year's championship as Furman is picked to edge UTC by a three-vote margin. Last fall, the Paladins finished with a 6-1 conference record and advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs with a 9-2 record. UTC, which handed Furman its only loss, played one less league game and finished 5-1. Furman is trying to become the first team to win four consecutive Southern Conference footbai! championships since West Virginia turned the trick in 1956. Under the tutelage of Dick Sheridan, the Paladins have posted a 26-7-1 record, 18-3 in SC play, over the last three campaigns in winning consecutive championships. Furman compiled 121 points in the balloting compared to UTC's 118. The Paladins were the choice of 10 voters to win that fourth straight title while the Moccasins were the pick on seven ballots. Western Carolina was the only other team to receive a first place vote. Hamrick Named To Coach Soccer Dean Hamrick, a former Western Carolina University soccer player and an assistant coach for the soccer Cats the past two seasons, has been named the school's interim soccer coach for the 1983 season, athletic director Bob Waters has announced. *** Hamrick, a 30-year-old native of Shelby, N.C, was a goalie for the WCU soccer team in 1979 and 1980 under head coach Malcolm Loughlin. For the past two seasons, under WCU head coach Hugh Jones, Hamrick served the program as a student assistant coach. He is also a veteran of the United State Marine Corps (1974-78) where he served in the Vietnam conflict and, athletically, played soccer and rugby. Hamrick had begun his collegiate career at Brevard College (1971) and played one year at WCU (1973), as a midfielder, before joining the armed services. Hamrick replaces Jones, who had coached the Catamounts to 7-7-3 (1981) and a 3-15-1 mark in 1982. Jones resigned from his coaching duties to become the director of a health spa in Florida. fine job," Waters said. Hamrick will have 12 lettermen returning from last year's club, including two second team All- Southern Conference Selections in defender Vernon Paiker and striker Karl Wilson. The Cats will play in the South Division of the Southern Conference, along with Furman, UT- Chattanooga and The Citadel. Appalachian State, Davidson, and Marshall will comprise the North Division as the conference will be in its first season of split- division play. "We are pleased to have Dean here this season. He not only fills a need for us "I think we have a good with the soccer program, but chance to be competitive if I'm confident he will do a we work very hard." Tag Football Pentathlon on lighted Intramural Waters Undergoes Surgery Bob Waters, Western Carolina University's director of athletics and head football coach, underwent surgery Thursday morning in the first step towards the possible correction of a neuromuscular disorder. Waters is preparing for his 15th season as WCU's head football coach and has served as the school's director of athletics since 1971. The 45-year old ex-NFL quarterback has undergone extensive testing and diagnosis during the past year at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill and Memorial Mission Hospital in Ashe-ville. Thursday's surgery, perform-ed by Dr. Clifford Faull at C.J. Harris Hospital in Sylva, was to remove a steel plate and bone spurs from the right ulna (forearmi) which was fractured when Waters was playing for the San Francisco 49'ers in the early 1960's. Waters and his physicians hope that the surgery will provide additional answers towards solving the neuromuscular problemsis that he has experienced for an extended period of time. If not, additional surgery will be scheduled in the near future. Waters says he expects to return to the practice field Thursday evening for the school's annual Meet The Cats intrasquad scrimmage and will continue to coach the Cata-mounts until additional surgery is scheduled. Waters has posted a 81 -61 -4 record in 14 seasons at Western Carolina. He is a 1960 graduate of Presbyterian College and played in the NFL for five seasons. He came to Western Carolina in 1969 from Stanford Univer-sity where he was an assistant football coach. ^**»»M««^^ ft Bob Waters fields below Leatherwood and Helder Dorms on Wed.- Oct. 12th from 4:00-5:30. Phone: 227-7477 Search Is On To Replace Miller CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Rick Miller, an assistant basketball coach at Western Carolina University for seven years, has resigned his position to enter private business. Miller, 37, served as an assistant to two head basketball coaches at WCU. He worked with Fred Conley during the 1973-76 and 76-77 seasons and for current head coach Steve Cottrell beginning with the 1978-79 season. Miller plans to return to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to assume control of a family business that his father had headed before declinine health forced him to retire. Cottrell says a search is already underway to find a replacement for Miller. Western's other assist-ant basketball coach is Dan Kenny who has been on Cottrell's staff for three years. "It is an una<.rstate-ment to say our program will miss Coach Miller," said Cottrell. "He has been more than a great assistant.. .he's a super person. I'm sure he is going to be successful in this new venture." Miller played his collegiate basketball under CM. Newton at Transyl-vania College in Lexington, Kentucky. He began his coaching career in 1968 at New River Junior High in Ft. Lauderdale, moved to the senior high ranks as an assistant at Pompano Beach High and then served as head basketball coach at Plantation High for three seasons. He first came to WCU in 1974 as a graduate assistant and became a full-time assistant a year later. Miller called the career change "the toughest decision I've ever ahd to make." "It has been a tremendous experience helping to build the basketball program at Western Carolina and working with Steve Cottrell and Bob Waters (WCU's athletic director)."
