The loss ends the Lady Cats' three-game conference winning streak, and drops their record to 8-13 overall, 5-8 in the conference. Furman improves to 12-9, 9- 4 in the Southern Conference. Head coach Jill Dunn stated, "Mentally, we weren't ready to play. We've been so fired up lately, but looked exhausted mentally." She summed up the game by stating, "We just didn't score." Freshman Laura Echols, a Conyers, Ga. native, paced WCU with 14 points. Echols has started nine games for the Lady Cats this seaon and has played in all 21 contests. Willow Russell and April Fleck added 13 apiece, giving the Cats three in double-figures. Amber Wheeler dished out a team-high five assists. Statistically, the Lady Cats played FU even. The Lady Cats' defense swiped 17 steals, a new season high. However, Furman shot a sizzling 53 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the three- point arc to get the win. Western cut the lead down to 14 early in the second half, but that was as close as they could get, as every time WCU mounted a run, the Lady Paladins answered. Amy Proffitt hit a WNBA range three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Furman lead to 17,40-23, at the break. Western, whose offense was forced outside of the paint, struggled shooting against a much bigger Lady Paladin squad in the first half. The Lady Cats managed a mere 26.5 percent from the floor, including 14 percent behind the arc. They shot only 50 percent from the foul line in the first 20 minutes of play. "In the first half, we looked scared to death," said Dunn on the large Paladin line-up. "But in the second half we took it to them and out guards started driving." The Lady Cats return home this Saturday for a 2 pm contest versus Davidson, who sits in the middle of the Southern Conference. The Lady Cats need just one more win to set a new mark for conference wins in a season. In 1996-97, they set the current record with five wins. However, Western has only one win this season against its five remaining opponents. That win came against Wofford's Lady Terriers in early January. Freshman Laura Echols led the Lady Cats with 14 points the loss at Furman. It was Echols ninth start this season. Cats Have Tough Week Without Rogers by Don Costello Managing Editor It wasn't an easy week for Catamount freshman point guard Casey Rogers. Last Monday, in a win against Georgia Southern, Rogers broke his nose, but stayed in the game. On Thursday, Rogers was told by team doctors that his nose was the worst break they had ever seen. He had surgery to put it back in place. On Saturday and Monday, Rogers could only sit and watch as Western fell to East Tennessee State and Davidson. "As hard as our guys played, it was hard to sit there knowing I could be out there," said a dejected Rogers, who was missing his first action ever in his high school and college career. Against Davidson Monday night, the Wildcats gave the Catamounts all they could handle in a 73-55 rout. Davidson led at the half 42-18 on 60 percent shooting while Western could only answer with 25 percent. "Our first half performance was something to behold," Davidson coach Bob McKillop said. "That was the sign of a maturing basketball team." "We dug ourselves a hole in the first half shooting the way we did," Western coach Phil Hopkins said. The Cats tried to dig out of that hole with a couple of runs at Davidson, but the Wildcats would flex their offensive muscle, pulling away each time. Freshman Cory Largent led the Cats against Davidson with 15 points while logging 39 minutes. Last Saturday, Western squared off against East Tennessee State in their first game without Rogers running the point. The Buccaneers were able to hold off the pesky Catamounts for a 74-66 win. "Our kids executed our game plan as well as we could hope," Hopkins said following the loss. "We just got wore down at the end." Michael Plavich, who is filling in as point guard while Rogers is out, has adjusted well to the position according to Hopkins. "He (Plavich) has made a lot of good decisions and had good court demeanor," Hopkins added. "That will help us further down the road. Plavich has scored in double figures in each of the last seven games, two of them from the point guard spot. WCU will hit the road this weekend to Greenville, SC, to take on the Furman Pala- photo by T. K. The Cats return home to play Wofford on Monday at 7 p.m.. See you there. Rugby Wins, 24-3 by John Nelson Contributing Writer After a muddy battle on the lower track, Western Carolina's Ruggers won with a convincing 24-3 victory over Wake Forest. In the first two minutes Western made a strong drive and scored three points on a penalty kick from Eric Koose. Following another strong possession, Western scored their first try of the game after an excellent move by the forwards, culminating in Chris Jones driving over the line. Wake Forest made its only mark on the board with a penalty kick soon after. With another show of Western strength seven more points were scored through Edwin Rios before the close of the half. The beginning of the second half was filled with more hard hits and strong defense from Western as they held off a offensive surge from Wake Forest. Near the end of the game the Western backs shined with another seven points from a well-executed offense that went in untouched. This win is a strong sign of what Western Rugby is capable of this year as they try to win the SEC championship. Many thanks for all the supporters that came out in the rain and cheered Western on. For anyone interested, it is not too late to join this emerging Catamount team, you can either attend practice behind Reid gym on Mondays through Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., or contact the Coach Mark Smith on 227-7333.
