  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday May 8, 1973 page 3 * * * Harriers Place In Quantico Relays A portion of the WCU track team was in action over the weekend as Coach Paul Jones took some of the Cat squad with him to participate in the prestigious Quantico Relays in Quantico, Va. The field competition was composed of fifty schools from all over the nation. Included were such names as Villanova, Penn State, Harvard, and an overall quality field. Although WCU only sent four people to the meet, they returned Coach Jones' confidence by placing inall four events entered. In particular, Jerry Gaines had a super day as the Cat runner participated in four events and brought home three medals. In the long jump, Gaines recorded a fine second place finish with a leap of 24'8". Then, hurrying to participate in the triple jump, Gaines returned a third place with his 49'8" mark. For the 440 and 880-relays, Randy Layman, LeVon Wilson Clarence Thomas and Gaines teamed-up to record a third place finish in the 880 and a fifth in the 440. The foursome ran a fantastic time of 1:28.8 in the 880 and a clock- ten jumpers in the nation. Gaines has been one of Western's top individual scorers this year in the triple jump, broad jump, and relay events, gaining outstanding performer recognition in more than one meet. Intramural Horseshoe Action In intramural action, league play has been concluded in the horseshoe competition with only the campus championship results still out. Winner of the American League singles title was Gordon Pangle of 4-5 Harrill, while Gary Wallace and John Mullis, also of 4-5 Harrill, teamed to take the doubles. Sweeping the Fraternity League were the TKE's, who grabbed both divisions. Hall Beaver won the singles, while fellow TKE's Tom Rush and Jack Hopkins proved victorious in the doubles competition. In the International League John Moose of the Grads took top honors, with Rob Hefner and Joe Hudson of the Animals teaming up for the doubles title. Tearing up the National League was G-l Albright, taking both positions. Marty Maxwell triumphed in the singles, while Randy Barnett and Tommy Ledford did the same in the doubles. 4 Hit-II 4lo*cA Bullplayers Victorious Over ASU; Drop Home Game To Furman Taking their tenth victory of the season, the WCU baseball team knocked off Appalachian State University 9-4 in a Sunday afternoon game at the Cats' Haywood Field. A crowd of 1,200 watched as the Cats recorded their fifth win in a row and seventh in their last eight. Going all the way for WCU was righthander Don Bright (5-2) who pitched a one-hit shutout over the last five innings and recorded his fourth victory in a row. Bright also beat Appalachian 5-1 last week in Boone. Gary Grindstaff s two-run ho mer in the fifth iced the decision for the Catamounts. A triple by Dale Fox and an RBI double by Bright in the fourth and seventh innings added to the attack. Grindstaff and Bright each had three hits for WCU, while Gary Fishel, Jim Grove, and Dale Fox had two hits each. Eight Mountaineer errors also contributed to the WCU score. Yesterday was a different story, however, as the Cats dropped their last home game of the season to Furman Uni versity 13-4. The Paladins only outhit the WCU squad 12 to 9, but five WCU errors gave Furman an unbelievable eight unearned runs on the afternoon. Two of the Cat runs came from wild pitches, as the Paladin defense also committed three errors. Picking up RBI's for the home team were Jimmy Stewart, who singled home Bruce West in the eighth, and Danny Carswell, who brought in Dale Fox in the ninth, on his sacrifice fly to deep center. Fox had two hits in the contest and scored twice for the Cats. Western pitcher Lester Wright (2-2) was the starter and loser against Furman, but Flip Watson and Jack Patterson could not hold the opposition in relief, either, as the porous defense left the Paladins numerous chances to score. The Cats' last baseball game of the season will be tomorrow in Columbia, S.C, as WCU meets the University of South Carolina at 3:00 p.m, WCU's record presently stands at 10-9, MdP pizzas: t&5 I.50-2.Z5 6ai£ «t «* BFiIDG S^M0^i FIND OUT ALL THE LITTLE INTERESTING THINGS THAT GO ON BEHIND THE TELLER'S WINDOW.
