  • Page 6 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday, May 2,1968 Cat Tracks By Ken Ball Wofford Leads Cats In RBI's The sports section of the Western Carolinian usually gives its headlines to some of the major varsity sports on campus. There is another important sports program on campus that seldom gets more than a small article off in a corner somewhere. True, this group does not equal the varsity sports in importance. However, the WCU Intramural Program does pro- vide competetive recreation for hundreds of students. A great deal of time and ef- fort goes into organizing an intramural program each quar- ter, and I feel that some of the people who make this program possible should be recognized. The Intramural Program is under the direction of Mr. Ramey Martin. Mr. Martin is assisted by a student intramural director who, with the help of a five or six man staff, supervises and arranges a game schedule. The Student Intramural Director for fall and winter quarter was Fred Adcock. Fred did an excellent job and provided a well organized program while he was director. The directorship was taken over spring quarter by Chris Smith. Chris has continued to run the program in the efficient manner that has come to be associated with the Intramural Program for the past few years. The Intramural Program is so arranged that almost any student on campus who wishes to can participate. Three full quarters of activities are offered in Intra- murals. The team sports of football, volleyball, water polo, basketball, and Softball are offered. Students can compete in such individual sports as tennis, billards, table tennis, handball, horseshoes, and even fishing. An unbelievable amount of work goes into a successful Intramural Program. In a team sport, for instance, game schedules for three leagues have to be co-ordinated. The games have to be supervised and officiated, records kept, and playoffs arranged between the different leagues. Working with the Intramural Program not only requires time and effort, it is often a thankless job. An intramural official seldom makes a call without arousing ill feeling or a sarcastic remark from someone. Therefore, I feel, and I'm sure all those who have participated in the Intramural Program this year feel that Mr. Martin, Fred Adcock, Chris Smith, and all the Intramural staff are to be congratulated for a job well done. Water Polo Action Water Polo action drew a step closer to the championship Monday as Tau Kappa Epsilon sneaked by Delta Sigma Phi 17-15. Helms was the big scorer for Delta Sig with nine points. However, Herrington and Thomas ran up a higher total for TKE, scoring five and six points each. The second game of the week saw the undefeated Day Students lose their first match to Kappa Alpha. The Day Students played a good game and scored 18 points on KA. This was the highest number of points scored on KA by any team this season. However, the Day Students just didn't have 'he man power to stop the KAs, Jack Hawks, who only played the second half, led the Day Students in scoring with 12 points. Steve Loflin, the league's top scorer was held to six points in this match. Hov/ever, his teammate Chris Smith added 16 points to KA's total. Today, at five o'clock, Delta Sigma Phi will face the Day Students. The winner of this match will then meet KA on Monday for the championship. By GARY TYLER It's not often that a baseball player comes off the bench to a sarting position and promptly leads the club in RBI's , but Bill Wofford is one of these elite but, talented few. Wofford, a freshman at WCU, come to college as'an outfielder and catcher, but now holds down a starting berth a first base. A great man in the clutch, the "Big Man with a Bat" did an amazing feat - a grand slam homerun - with the first hit of his college career. Bill's first grand slam/;ame after he-stepped into the batter's box in a pinch hit role against Elon, and gave the Cats a victory. Wofford connected for another grand slam in the ninth inning of the recent Belmont- Fa Holds Round—up On Sunday, April 28, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Western Carolina University held their Annual Spring Round- Up at Camp Shelton located in Glenville, N. C. Over 100 high school athletes and coaches from Western North Carolina attended. Brevard High School had the most representives. It was an afternoon of games which created much enthusiasm, and a cook-out was held in the evening. Coach Jim Gudger, head basketball coach at Western Carolina University, spoke on how to stand up for Christ in our Athletic minded world. Members of the FCA Huddle from WCU spoke briefly on what the FCA meant to them. CLYDE'S RESTAURANT Where The Home fblkt Put Welcomes WCU Stuientt 1231 Balsam Road Waynesville, N. C. Considering that the Gas- tonia, N. C. native watched the first third of Western's games from the bench, his 17 RBI's look remarkable. Coach Ron Blackburn commented that Wofford "made the starting nine out of necessity - the other guys just weren't hitting - and from his fine - performances in the clutch as a pinch hitter." "Bill's not a flash-in-the- pan type player either," said Blackburn, "he goes out and does what he needs too." Known as the best hustler on the team, Wofford is active whether on the bench or in the starting lineup. "BiU's the type of player that's hard to keep out of the starting lineup because he's determined and really likes the game," said the coach. One of the most popular players on the team, Bill is not only valuable while at bat 'or the Cats. His sparkling play at first base has kept the team in the game several times. Blackburn concluded by saying that Wofford was one of a kind in another respect - he likes horses better than girls.
