  • westerns* e arolmian GSU Pounds Western; Eagles Roll Up 416 Yards by Donald Costello STATESBORO, GA.— The 11th- ranked Georgia Southern Eagles dominated the Catamounts on both sides of the ball en route to a 30-7 victory in South Georgia on Saturday. GSU utilized its potent option game to run up 342 yards on the ground, led by a 93- yard performance from senior fullback Roderick Russell. Senior quarterback Kenny Robinson ran for 78 yards. On the flip side, the Catamount offense sputtered to a season-low offensive output of only 226 yards. Senior quarterback Josh Brooks struggled to move the offense down the field while completing on 6 of 13 pass attempts for 43 yards. The inefficiency of the Catamount offense kept the defense on the field for more than 37 minutes, while Western had the ball for 22:44. Head Coach Bill Bleil said the inability ofthe offense to maintain possession kept the defense on the field too long and that was a contributing factor to the loss. Another factor to the Cats' defeat was three fumbles that resulted in a loss of possession all three times. The first fumble came with just over five minutes left in the first half when Tracy Biggs fumbled on the WCU 35-yard line and the Eagles recovered. GSU took the ball the remaining 35 yards on ten plays for a touchdown that put the Cats in a hole, 20-0. With Georgia Southern leading 20-0 later in the second quarter, the Cats gained possession of the ball with 23 seconds remaining in the half. Western was deep inside their own territory looking at 90 yards of field ahead for a score. Instead of taking a knee and ending the quarter, Josh Brooks fumbled the ball on the WCU five-yard line and the ball was recovered by the Eagles. The fumble allowed Georgia Southern to convert on a field goal to end the half and take a 23-0 lead into the locker room. Western never recovered in the second half as Georgia Southern took its first possession 51 yards in just over three minutes to give the Eagles a 30-0 lead that all but crippled the Cats. Bleil said that Georgia Southern is a team that Cats could not make any mistakes against if they expected to win. "We really shortened the field for them several times with our mistakes," said Bleil. Georgia Southern head coach Paul Johnson, a WCU graduate, said that his team's game plan was to shut down the Western running game in order to force them to pass. "If we can force a team to play one dimensional football, then we feel we'll always have a chance to win," concluded Johnson. It seemed at times that the Western of fense was non-dimensional in terms of moving the football, but found a new dimension by way of penalties. Nine penalties cost the Catamounts 79 yards in the loss. On the second drive of the game, the Cats drove from their own 25-yard line to the Georgia Southern 49 only to see a holding penalty back them up to their own 42. From that point the drive lost its momentum as Josh Brooks was sacked for a loss of 15 yards on a 3rd-down play that backed the Cats up to their own 35 facing a fourth down and 26-yards to go for the first down. Ken Hinsley was forced to punt. A ten-yard illegal blocking penalty on a Lamont Williams punt return backed the Cats up to their own ten-yard line and the lack of room may have contributed to the Josh Brooks fumble late in the second half. "Major penalties hurt our offense as it seemed that every time we would get something going, we were hit with a holding penalty," said Bleil. The loss puts the pressure on the Cats if they are hoping for a Southern Conference title or a spot in the I-AA playoffs. A team with two losses in the conference has not won the conference title since 1981 when Furman went 5-2. The next opponent for Western will be the Wofford College Terriers. The Terriers will roll into Cullowhee on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. game at Whitmire Stadium. Cats Hope to Recover Against Terriers by Daniel Hooker On what will be an event-filled Homecoming weekend, the Catamount football team will look to get back in the win column as the Wofford College Terriers come to Cullowhee. It will mark the third straight game that the Terriers have been a Homecoming opponent this season and the third different state they have played in (Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina). The series between Wofford and Western dates back to 1952. The Catamounts hold a slim lead over the Terriers in the record book, 10-9, thanks in part to dominant performances recently in the series. Last year, the Terriers won the statistical battle, totaling more first downs, total offensive yardage, and time-of-possession, but lost the game, 24-6. Five turnovers, 3 interceptions and 2 lost fumbles, gave the Cats ample opportunities. This season, Head Coach Mike Ayers' team has a dismal -8 turnover margin, much worse than the Cats' -3. This year, the Terriers bring a 1 -3 overall record (1-2 in conference play) into E. J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field. De spite the losing record, in the last two losses, the Terriers have only been defeated by a combined total of 5 points. Their one win came against the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) at home in Spartanburg, S.C. One of the issues for Western Carolina will be how well the Cats control the Terriers' senior quarterback, Brad Smothers. Last year, he threw for 493 yards, with a 95.7 percent pass efficiency. He also totaled 666 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Last week against Morehead State, in Kentucky, he scored three rushing touchdowns of 2, 13, and 18 yards on his way to gaining 100 yards in a losing effort. Smothers also passed for 98 yards on only 3 completions. Out of the backfield, the combination of seniors Michael Edens, who had 36 yards rushing with two touchdowns, and Miles Lane, who tallied 84 yards, will test the Catamounts' defense. Last season, the two combined for nearly 950 yards on the ground. On the defensive side of the ball, the Catamount trio of Brooks, Hooks, and Crooks will be challenged by the Terrier's senior free-safety, Eric Daniell and junior, Western Carolina vs. Georgia Southern WOFFORD Joe Werner. Daniell has one interception and is second on the team in tackles with 38. Also, Vance Jones will test the Cats' receivers with his two interceptions on the year. Werner, from his outside line-backer position, leads Wofford with 39 tackles, seven of which were for losses. He also has one ofthe four Terrier sacks this season. His total tackle numbers is greater now than it was all of last season (37). At half-time, the Homecoming court will be introduced, and then will culminate with the announcement of the Homecoming king and queen. Kick off for the Homecoming game is set for 2:00 p.m. at E. J. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field.
