  • March 21,1996 Western Carolinian 19 Sports Baseball Cats Tied for 1st Place in the Southern Conference Western Carolina University's baseball team spent its spring break in un- spring-like settings in Kentucky and West Virginia, but it turned out to be one of the most successful road trips in WCU's history. The Catamounts returned home with a perfect 6-0 record on the road trip, extended their win streak to eight games, and found themselves in a tie for first place in the Southern Conference standings. Western, now 15-13-1 overall and 9-3 in conference play, played 23 of its first 29 games on the road will see a reversal in its schedule for the final six weeks of the season as the Cats will play 20 of its remaining 27 games at Childress Field/ Hennon Stadium where WCU's team have won 72% of their games over the last 19 seasons. The Catamounts' eight-game win streak will be put in jeopardy this Wednesday afternoon when they face No. sixth ranked Tennessee in Knoxville. Western will be at home this Thursday for a non-conference game with Milligan (3:00 pm.) and will host Virginia Military in a three-game conference series this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12:00 noon and a single game Sunday at 1:00 P-m. The VMI series will be the first of •our consecutive weekend three-game series fw the Catamounts. The combination of Western's sweep <rf a three-game series at Marshall and one joss by Furman in its series with The Citadel last weekend created a three-way tie for the t0P spot in the Southern Conference standings. WCU and Furman are 9-3 while ^orgia Southern is 6-2 - all with identical .50 Wlnning percentages. East Tennessee tate ls on'y one game back at 8-4. Everyone else trails by at least four and one-half f>mes. Appalachian State is in fifth place at -' followed by The Citadel and VMI (3-6), avidson (2-7) and Marshall (06). . Coacn Keith LeClair got three strong P> thing performances, three productive hitting efforts, and solid defense throughout last week's six wins. Bark Maxwell went the route and struckout a career high 14 batters in a 4-3 win over Eastern Kentucky to start the unbeaten road trip. Western banged out 14 hits the next day, led by Alex Tolbert's three hits, in an 11-8 win over EKU. Four Catamounts hit home runs in a 9- 7 win at Morehead State. Home runs by freshman Chris Moore and Tolbert in the eighth inning highlighted a four run rally that brought the Cats back from a 5-2 deficit and ignited a 10-6 win over Marshall in the first game of last Saturday's doubleheader. Brian Bain and Maxwell combined on a four-hitter in a 4-3 win over the Thundering Herd in the second game. Mark DeFelice struckout eight in nine innings to help complete the sweep of Marshall in a 7-1 win last Sunday. Catcher J.P. Eurwell batted .571 in the week's six games and Maxwell picked up two saves in Saturday's doubleheader at Marshall to go along with his complete game win at Eastern Kentucky. "We got productivity at the plate from everyone in the lineup last week and that consistent hitting along with several good pitching performances and a steadily improving defense got us rolling," said LeClair. "We are in good shape in the conference race as the schedule favors us with nine of our next 12 conference games are on our home field. We survived a very demanding early schedule and now have some momentum. We can't let up and play without intensity just because we are going to be playing at home," he added. Tolbert, a junior first baseman, continues to lead the Catamounts in several offensive categories with a .443 batting average, 15 doubles, 27 runs scored and 29 runs batted in. Moore, a rookie third baseman, is hitting a solid .341 with three home runs and 10 doubles. Dave McKay, sophomore designated hitter/outfielder, has hit four home runs in his last nine games.
