  • March 21,1996 Western Carolinian Features PUNK BAND FINDS SCENE by Arch Stanton Staff Reporter The Long Beach punk band Sublime believes that 1996 will be "The Year of the Skunk." Skunk Records was founded by Sublime in 1992 so that they would have their own record label. The band realized that they were evolving from the "below average garage punk band that every kid wanted to play his backyard party" into some kind of cult entity. They pawned all of their equipment, founded Skunk Records and sold over 150,000 of their first album,40 oz to Freedom. Sublime's second album Robbin' the Hood was released in 1994. The album didn't sell as well their first endeavor ranking in at just over 35,000 copies. These days Sublime seems to be developing quite an interesting following. The band has played shows with fIREHOSE, Bad Brains, the Melvins, Rage Against the Machine, the Butthole Surfers, the Ramones, as well as some other established acts. Their eclectic blend of punk, dub and really weird spoken word has served the band well, landing them on several compilations, including Punk Sucks, The Misfits of Ska, and the popular cartoon theme covers compilation Saturday Morning. One of their songs also recently found its way onto the soundtrack for the movie "Mall Rats." Now, after two years of steady touring, Sublime is back in the studio. The album will be produced with the help of the legendary Butthole Surfer Paul Leary, as well as David Kahne who has worked with acts such as Fishbone and Soul Coughing. With newfound distribution and upcoming tours in Europe, Australia, Japan and Canada, Sublime is sure to be making a name for themselves in '96.
