  • Western Carolinian March 21,1996 News Public Safety Highlights for March • 3/4 A student who was charged with assault on a female, DWI and failing to stop for blue light and siren on 9/12/95 in connection with an incident, which occurred in front of Scott, pled guilty to all charges. Prayer for judgement was continued in the assault with the consent of the victim. The defendant was fined $500 and court costs on the traffic charges. • 3/4 A student charged with DWI on 11/17/95 pled guilty in district court in Sylva. Judgement was postponed. • 3/4 Officers assisted a lifeguard who had been locked out of Breese Gym at 8:40 p.m. • 3/4 Officers assisted a student at Graham Infirmary who had been injured in a wrestling match at the Sig Ep House at 1:10 a.m. • 3/5 A student charged with larceny of signs on 11/5/96 pled guilty. Prayer for judgement was continued on payment of $200 restitution. • 3/5 A student charged with possession of a weapon on campus pled guilty in district court in Sylva. Prayer for judgement was continued for six months, and the shotgun was ordered held and released only to the defendant's father. • 3/5 An employee reported an attempted larceny and damage to a washer in the Leatherwood laundry room at 10 a.m. • 3/5 Officers served a warrant on a female student for issuing a worthless check at 10:50 a.m. • 3/5 Officers reported parts stolen from a bicycle near the Food Court at 2 a.m. • 3/5 Officers assisted the WCU EMS team with a sick student in Helder at 2:20 a.m. • 3/7 Officers received a complaint of a book buyer soliciting without a permit in Coulter. They located the subject who had been warned once before and banned him from campus for his second violation at 3:05 p.m. • 3/7 A student reported the trunk of a vehicle open in the Field House lot at 8:08 p.m. Officers contacted the owner. • 3/7 Officers arrested a student for DWI and reckless driving at 1:05 a.m. Intoxilyzer results were .08%. • 3/7 Officers responded to a fire alarm at Walker at 11:30 p.m. • 3/7 Student workers discovered trash cans turned over at Brown Cafeteria at 12:20 a.m. • 3/7 Officers assisted the NC SHP with an investigation of a hit & run accident at the Pi Kappa Phi house where a female non-student was seriously injured. The driver of the suspect vehicle has been identified and charges are pending. • 3/7 Officers assisted Housing staff with a student passed out in a hallway in Harrill at 5:35 a.m. The incident was referred to Housing. • 3/8 Officers jump-started 15 vehicles and unlocked six as students began leaving for spring break. • 3/8 Investigators from the Sheriff's Department reported that they had identified two other occupants of the vehicle, which hit several people at the Pi Kappa Phi house and left the scene. • 3/9 Officers assisted a faculty member who locked his keys in his office at 10:10 a.m. • 3/9 Officers talked to two people who were loading wood, which had been cut from the hill across Central Drive from the Methodist Church, at 12:02 p.m. and assured that they replaced the wood. The wood has been cut and laying on the hill for more than a month. • 3/12 A student charged with hit & run in connection with an incident, which occurred between Scott and Helder, pled guilty to failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk on March 11 in District Court in Sylva. He was fined $10 and the court costs. Civil charges are pending. • 3/14 A Physical Plant supervisor reported the theft of a wooden sign, which read "Catamounts NCAA Bound," from the front of the Administration Building. • 3/17 A student reported that parts had been stolen from his bicycle while it was locked in front of Reynolds between 3/ 8 and 3/17. • 3/17 Officers stopped a male non- student for reckless driving and charged him with failing to carry his operator's license at 8:52 p.m. SEWING Is it the sound of that whispery voice, or those big, intellectual words?
