  • 20 Western Carolinian March 21,1996 Sports Cats Prove Worthy in the NCAA Sweet 64 by Sean Cunningham Staff Reporter Involved in their first NCAA appearance in history the Cats of WCU found themselves playing like old veterans. It was evident that the Cats were ready when they responded quickly to an early Purdue lead. A three pointer by Joel Flemming pulled Western within two. The inspired play of Anquell McCullum, Jarvis Graham, and Kevin Kullum helped to tie the score with 13:18 remaining in first half action. The next seven minutes went back and forth with McCullum and Joe Stafford pacing the Cats with three-point baskets. As time went on Western fell behind and once again managed to route before going in down 36-35 at the intermission. At the end of a light first half the Cats were shooting over 57% while the Boilamakers shot 51%. There were also five ties and six lead changes in thc first half of play. At the start of the second half the action went back and forth with Purdue holding on by a bucket. At the 11:04 mark Kullum went to the line to pull Western within one. The next 6:37 was controlled by a tough Purdue team. Western coach Phil Hopkins called a timeout with 4:21 remaining, and down seven the stage was set, to do it again (comeback). Behind a determined Scott Scholtz thc Cats cut the lead down to three. On a clutch three pointer by McCullum, Western played itself into a tic with 3:05 left in regulation. Following a Purdue timeout the Cats missed a couple of free throws allowing the Boilermakers to control the game on a defensive rebound that lead to slam on thc other end by Purdue center, Brandon Brantly. With only 38 seconds left and down two Western called a timeout to finallize their end-of-game stratagy. After sending the Boilermakers to the line Western got another chance as Brad Miller missed thc front end of a 1-1 (free-throw). A Scholtz rebound led to a couple of unsuccessful attempts before thc final buzzer ended the dream of Cullowhee, USA. Southern Conference Tourney...Champions! by Brad Chappell Staff Reporter When Western Carolina entered the Southern Conference Tournament, the team ranked first in the conference's Southern Division. This year's tourney was hosted by the Greensboro Coliseum for the first time in tournament history. The new site enabled more fans to join in on thc excitement. Changing the site was opposed by many league patrons around the area due to the distance to Greensboro, NC. Despite the opposition, the tournament was a huge success. In their first game of the tournament, WCU faced Appalachian State, the school's biggest rivalry. The Catamounts ended the regular season with a 91-72 route over the Mountaineers. Appalachian showed they could play with Western, keeping this quarterfinal matchup close the entire game. Western went into the halftime break up .35-31. Western proved themselves with points being distributed throughout the team, finishing off Appalachian 74-66. Coach Hopkins stated, "It feels good to win with Anquell McCollum going 0 for 9 on three-pointers." McCollum finished the game with a team high of 16 points, followed by Kevin Kullum with 15, Joel Fleming with, 14, and Joe Stafford with 10. VMI became Western's semifinal opponent. Thc Cats showed overwhelming superiority in the first half. Western shot nearly 60 percent from the field, and were perfect from the line. The Catamounts started the second half with a comfortable 12-point lead. With improved shooting, VMI forced Western into a close game. Anquell McCollum put on a shooting clinic hitting 15 of 22 field goals, 5 out of 10 being three pointers. Along with McCollum's sharpshooting, Joel Fleming had 17 points, Kevin Kullum hit 15, and Jarvis Graham contributed 12 to Western's 97-93 win. Western shot 57% from the field while VMI finished with 38%. VMI stayed in the game living by the three-point shot. Hitting 17 of 43 3- pointcrs the Keydets made a run at a comeback. Western's shooting and their first-half lead proved to be too much for VMI to overcome. This win placed the Catamounts up against Davidson, who Scholtz drives in Albuquerque against the Boilermakers were undefeated in the conference, for the tournament title. The ehampionship game against the Davidson Wildcats had a different scenario than Western's previous tournament games. Just before the start of the game, Western's assistant coaches convinced head coach Phil Hopkins to play Davidson in a zone defense. Davidson, expecting the Catamounts to be in a man-toman defense, acted surprised and seemed to struggle scoring in the first half. Western finished the half with yet another 12-point lead. Western's 4fj% first-half shooting was evenly dispersed v>jth no team member reaching double figures. This game became a grinding battle with more physical play than usual. With only five three-point shots made between both teams, this game portrayed Western's diversity in scoring. The Catamounts held on to give Davidson their first loss in conference play. This 69-60 win provided Western with their first Southern Conference Tournament victory. Along with this title, the Cats received their first-ever NCAA Tournament birth. During the post-game celebration and interviews, first year coach, Phil Hopkins added to his celebration by proposing to his fiancee. Hopkins and his Catamounts gave themselves and Western Carolina something to cherish for years to come.
