In addition to the second place finishes by both WCU's men and women, head coach Danny Williamson was voted the men's indoor track and field coach of the year. The Catamounts finished second to Appalachian State in both meets. The men's team finished only seven points behind ASU, 105 to 98, with East Tennessee State, Virginia Military Institute, Marshall, UT-Chattanooga and The Citadel completing the standings. It was the closest finish within recent memory as four teams had a share of the lead during the final day, and only 26 points separated the top four finishers. It was WCU's highest ever finish in the conference's indoor meet. The women's team trailed ASU, 156 to 73, and finished ahead of ETSU, UT-C, Furman, Marshall and Davidson for its third straight second place finish in the league's indoor championship meet. "Our men were involved in the closest finish I've ever seen in the conference meet, and it was the best run ever at the championship," said Williamson, a Sylva, NC, native who is in his eighth year as WCU's track and field and cross country coach. It was his fifth conference coach of the year award. Shawn Miller, a Salisbury senior, paced the WCU men'seffort with three first place finishes and a fourth place. He won the long jump, high jump, 55 meter hurdles and placed fourth in the triple jump. Reggie Allison, a Charlotte junior, claimed WCU's other first place finish as he won the triple jump. Jeff Capps (Jr., Weaverville) took second place in the pole vault. Williamson called his women's team performance "outstanding and very promising for the future." He added, "This is basically a young team that will get better with each meet and will continue to make a run at the championship." Rita Roberts, Daree Thompson and Machon Hill led the scoring. Roberts (Sr., Arden) won the 5,000 meters and was second in the 3,000 meters with school record times in both events. Thompson (So., Mt Airy) was second in the 55 meters and third in the 200 meters and ran the anchor leg on the second place mile relay team. Her times in the sprints were school records. Hill (So., Angier) was second in the longjump, fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the 55 meters.
