  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN LETTERS TO THE EDITOR March 21, 2002 How Much Do You (Really) Love America? Dear Editor, Whenever I hear our national Anthem I swell with pride. When I see "Old Glory" furl and unfurl during this piece tears come to my eyes. Yes, I am proud to be an American! This country has been my home for close to five decades and I never tire of standing tall with my hand or hat over my heart during the playing of the anthem. Sometimes I even do this when it's on television. Do you think this is overdoing it? Maybe. Still, this is done, what, once a week during a football season? How about four times a day seven days a week? Ridiculous you say? Well, that's what is expected of us (any and everybody in and around the Western Carolina University campus) when the bell tower plays, not one, but two stanzas of "The Star Spangled Banner." Even the military plays it just once a day at 0800 (that's 8:00 am for all the non 24-hour clock people) with the raising of the "Stars and Stripes." Furthermore, people stop their cars during the playing of the national anthem. So how is it that of all the people in and around this campus, I am the only person (that I've seen so far) that stops, places the right hand over the heart and faces the bell tower during this representation of America? This simple act of showing regpect for our country shows people from other countries just how much we really love this land. Actions speak louder than words, my fellow Americans. Believe it or not little things show the true worth of someone's words. So I ask you, friends, how much do you really love America?
