The center is available to those wishing to know more about alcoholism. The Staff is trained in the field of alcoholism and will assist any citizen in Jackson County whether it be in the way of writing a research paper or assisting someone with an alcohol related problem. The Information Center houses some of the most current materials dealing with the subject of alcohol along with a number of programs to suit the needs of schools, churches, civic groups and general public. The renter is supervised by the Jackson County Council on Alcoholism. This council is made up of professionals and non-professionals who represent a cross section of community life. The people serving on the council have given seven years of their time and expert advise. It was through their efforts that the information center came into being. Jo Moon, director of the center, has been with the program since its inception. She has had training at some of the better institutions for alcohol studies. Mrs. Moon continues to search for new materials and has a very good selection of current films. The Information Center, along with the Jackson County Council and the school system in Jackson County, sponsors an alcoholism awareness program and sometimes referred to as the scholarship program. Seniors in all county high schools are able to write a research paper and submit it in competition for scholarships amounting to $1,000. The scholarship program for 1978-79 has just been completed witn aff four winners planning to attend WCU this fall. Those winning this year were: Annette Panned, first place and a $500 scholarship; Laura Setzer, second place and a $300 scholarship; Miss Krissie Sutton, third place and a $200 scholarship; and fourth place was Miss Carolyn Kirby who was recognized with an honorable mention.
