  • Western Carolinian November 9,1995 News Five-0 Finds Damaged Art, Stolen Signs at KA House Mil .!• ■IJI1.UI1 I I by Shelley Eller StaffReporter Vandals got to "Gumby" and "Picnic" early Sunday morning, according to Gene McAbee, Director of Public Safety The "Two by Two" sculpture (aka "Gumby") located at Killian Plaza was broken into several pieces after being tilted over and beaten with rocks. "Picnic," also known as the picnic table in front of Dodson Cafeteria, was turned completely over but was unharmed. Someone also stole the decorative signs in front of Scott Hall, Hunter Library, Graham Infirmary and the Chancellor's residence. These signs had a cumulative value of approximately $1,000. On Monday, Public Safety officials issued a search warrant for the Kappa Alpha fraternity house. McAbee said all signs except the one stolen from the Chancellor's residence were recovered, along with several signs belonging to the Department of Transportation. Pieces of "Gumby" were also seized from the house, he said. McAbee stated that it is a felony to steal signs and cause damage to works of art displayed on state property. Criminal charges are pending against the suspects. "We are in the process of interviewing members of the fraternity," McAbee said. "It appears that there are three or four members responsible for stealing signs and also three or four members who turned over the statues. These are not necessarily the same members in both incidents." "There may be possible action with the University System toward the fraternity because of the general knowledge among the members about the stolen property inside the house. Members of the fraternity who allowed stolen property to be in their rooms inside the house are being charged even though they didn't steal it," he concluded. Toby Kennedy, president of the KAs, commented, "The actions should not be associated with KA but with the individuals. Their actions are embarrassing to the order and will be dealt with in the organization, although I would like to apologize on behalf of the KAs for the behavior." Bill Buchanan, co-coordinator of the Outdoor Sculpture program, stated that he has not yet talked to William Donnan, the sculptor of "Two by Two" about the damages. "I am disappointed that it happened," Buchanan said. "I don't think it represented the attitudes of students on campus. I think there are other ways of expressing attitudes about the sculptures besides the activities that have taken place." There was just one problem. For the second session in a row, there were not enough Senators in attendance to vote on the measure. In order for a measure to be voted on, 29 Senators must be present. On Monday, only 24 were present; at the previous meeting, 23 individuals were present. The resolution calls for rape and assault prevention services for WCU students. Hodges said the SGA will provide the services at no cost to the university. According to Hodges, the program will be funded entirely by the SGA. SGA vice president Rhonda Cole brought the meeting to order and after her assistant Joe Monroe called roll. Cole stated, "Once again, ladies and gentleman, we do not have enough Senators to hold a meeting, so we can't vote on anything. If you know anyone who is not here, please inform them that the meetings are important and they should attend them.
