  • 2 Thursday, May 11, 1972 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN The facts about tuition increase By ASHBY CLEARY There have been many arguments, threats, grievances, and hatreds hurled at the administration and others for the increase in tuition. Few people have the time to look at the factst and, even with these facts, the arguments, threats, etc. will continue. Ir is important to know what you are talking about and what you are up against, so take a look at this; Following is a list of the tuition and fees applicable to an undergraduate student at Western Carolina College in 19- 62-63: Dormitory Students: Tuition: In-state: $50.00; Out-of-state: $134.00. Graduate fees that year were $290.00 for in-state and $334.00 for out-of-state students. The next year, 1963-64, the fees stayed the same. In 1964- 65, the dormitory rate was upp- ed from the previous $39 to$54, and a Student Center Fee was initiated equalling $10. Totals for that year were $280 for in-state and $364 for out-of-state students. The 1965-66 academic year brough a $3.00 Health and F.E. Fee. increasing the previous totals by that much only. 1967-68 brought three increases, 1) an increase in dorm rates from the relatively new $54.00 to S62.00 2) Health Service was increased by one dollar, and 3) the Book Rental Fee increased from $7.00 to $10.00. Then, in 1968-69, out-of-state tuition increased to $200.00, the dormitory fee went up again to $70.00, and Health Service again increased, this time by $2„00, bringing it to $7.00. A new fee was also initiated this year, Mental Health Clinic: $1.00, and the Recreational and Athletic fee was increased from $2.00 to $26.00. New totals: in-state: $311 and out-of-state: $461. Out-of-state tuition was again increased in 1969-70. This time the increase was to $250. Another increase was made in the dorm rate: to $76.00. Then, relatively, a first: the cafeteria fee was raised by $10 to $120. Again, another new fee was initiated: University Development Fee: $10.00, New totals: in-state; $337 and out -of-state: $537. The year 1970-71 brought an increase in tuition for both in and out-of-state students: $67 and $317, respectively Also with this came an increase in the dorm rates to $85, OFFICERS OF THE NEW Western Carolina Health Careers Club are 0-r) Mrs. Sumner V. The club is the first Health Careers organization established on a college campus in North Carolina, and has been organized under the auspices of the School of Health Sciences and Services and Dean John F. Bargner. of - state: $325. Recreational, Cultural, and Athletic Fee increased by $5, and a new Athletics Facilities Fee of $5 was "levied." Differing values were placed on the dorms for the first time, and the final totals were: In-state studetns: S362-S392 Out-of-state: $612-$642. Following is a list of the tuition and fees applicable to an undergraduate student at Western Carolina University 1972- 73: Dormitory Student: Tuition: In-state-$75; Out-of- state-$600 Health Fees: $12 Other Fees:* In-state-S65; Out- of-state-$73 Book Rental Fee $10 Room (men) $120-150 (includes $50 deposit) Room (women) $140-442 (includes $50 deposit) Board $120 Totals: Residence Hall Student: men: In - state $412-442 Out-of-state $945-975 women: In-state $432-442 Out-of-state $965-975 ♦Other fees, covers such things as incidental fees and charges, recreational and cultural fee, athletic fee, mental health clinic fee, and the university center fee and athletic facilities fee. Some of these totals may vary to a slight degree because th'e laundry fee is still included in these figures, but despite that, there are a couple of new fees totalling four dollars per quarter, One of these fees is a one dollar intramural fee which will supposedly insure that Reid Gym will be open nights next Certain, and many of the fees here at Western are under close scrutiny by students, faculty, and the administration. Many of them are under a lot more than just scrutiny: The University Laundry Service will apparently be nonexistent next year because of the discontinuance of the laundry as of June 30.1972. The business officeattributes this decision to two reasons. The first reason is that many students have complained about having to pay a "mandatory" laundry fee. The second reason was the fact that the laundry was operating in the red because of lack of funds. The main reason for CONTINUED ON Page 8 . . . .
