ETSU needs a touchdown to tie the game, and force a third overtime. Blitz! The Catamount defense comes hard and forces an incomplete pass. Game over. Cats win. Western Carolina defeated their mountain rival, the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers, 31-24, in front of 10,161 screaming fans in E. J. Whifmire Stadium last Saturday. This game was a testament to the Catamounts' determination and confidence. Late in the fourth quar ter ETSU completed a 56-yard pass play inside Western's 20-yard line. Instead of giving up after that, which might have happened in years past, the defense got even tougher. They held ETSU to a field goal and took the game to overtime. This game had more significance than just a thrilling win. It is the first overtime game ever played in E.J. Whitmire Stadium and the first back-to-back conference wins since 1994. Sams News Editor Over the Fall Break this year in October, WCU plans to upgrade their web-based Student Information Systems to a system known as the SIS Plus, or Web for Students, according Kenneth H. Foshee, the university registrar. Web for Students will still include grades, transcripts, account summaries and transfer credits. "Students also will see some additional options, including the ability to update their address infor mation," Foshee commented. "We're redesigning our student record system in part so that we can be sure we are year 2000 compliant, but doing so is also allowing us the opportunity to install a new Web interface that students will be using to access information," Foshee said. "While the content of the new interface is very similar to what students have been using, we think they will find the look and feel of the new Web interface to be much more user friendly and much more intuitive to use." The new Web for Students will also allow the university to have Web-based registration as early as March or April of next year. The new system also mean more security for student data. Student information will still be accessed via WIN, Western Information Network, and will include the Web for Student pages when the system is complete. Downtime for the upgrade will begin at noon on Friday, October 2 and is expected to end by Wednesday, October 7. "Of course, unforeseen problems could arise, which would delay the start-up of the new system," Foshee stated, "Until we have completely converted and verified everything, students will still have access to their information through the old system."
